re you guys aware of this!!?!!?!

My girlfriends mom just alerted me and I thought I should the bad news:

http://www.elsegundo.net/city/police...2-19-2007.html

On Monday, December 17, 2007, the El Segundo Police Department arrested five people who are suspected of stealing catalytic converters from parked Toyota vehicles. The three suspects in the first incident were identified as Jorge Adrian Sanchez, age 26 from the City of Compton, Fernando Garcia Rivas, age 45 and Judy Ann Jimenez, age 43 both from the City of Downey.

At 3:02 am, a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for traffic violations as it was leaving the residential area. The officer’s investigation revealed three catalytic converters and numerous burglary tools lying on the rear floorboard behind the driver’s seat. All three were arrested and booked at the El Segundo Police Department.

Approximately eight hours later, another patrol officer was in route to investigate a crime report of a catalytic converter theft when the officer observed a vehicle traveling in the residential area with no evidence of registration. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. Inside the vehicle, the officer observed a catalytic converter lying on the passenger side floorboard. Upon searching the trunk, officers found two additional stolen catalytic converters, one of which was still hot to the touch. The two suspects arrested during this incident were identified as Joel Martinez, age 22 and Manuel Antonio Barriga, age 39 both from the City of Los Angeles.

SUV’s, in particular Toyota 4Runners and Toyota trucks, have been targeted by catalytic converter thieves for their scrap metal value which contain small amounts of precious metals.

Detectives investigating the case are working with the victims in an attempt to identify their recovered catalytic converters and return them.

Thieves target Toyotas in Roseville

Toyota owners in Roseville have been hit hard by thieves who are removing catalytic converters from the vehicles, police say.

Since November, police have counted 44 incidents in which catalytic converters have been stolen, mostly from Toyota pickup trucks and Toyota 4-Runners.

Police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said the thieves steal the converters for the metal.

"We've heard that metal recyclers pay about $80 for them," Gunther said.

Unfortunately for Toyota owners, it costs about $1,000 for parts and labor to have a catalytic converter replaced, she said.

Most of the vehicles targeted have been parked in driveways or on residential streets, Gunther said. The converters are easy to take off Toyotas, where they are located under the vehicles and can be removed without the thief being seen.

A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle's emission control system. Vehicle owners usually notice a theft when they start the engine and hear a loud, harsh noise, Gunther said.

Fourteen of the thefts occurred in Roseville in November, 23 in December and seven during the first two weeks of January, she said.

She urged Toyota truck and SUV owners to park their vehicles inside locked garages.

Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to call police at (916) 774-5070 or the Roseville Crime Stoppers, which offers rewards for anonymous tips leading to an arrest, at (916) 783-7867.

So guys, what's the deal?? How do we protect ourselves...........I hate not having a garage!! Any ideas on how to thief proof??

There's the problem. Lobby your city, if there are any recyclers, to put in an ordinance to require verifiable ID from anyone recycling converters, or copper wire or pipes, commonly stolen from houses by the tweekers. Make it as tough to recycle stolen converters as it is to use a pawn shop as a fence for stolen jewelery. Then escalate to the state level.

I live in LA, there are probably 1,000's of recycle centers. But I do see your point, my dad gets stuff ripped off from job sites all the time. I hate tweekers

Here are a couple of things I thought off.
1. lower my 4runner so low nobody can crawl underneath
2. coat my cat converter with ********
3. locking nuts

What do you guys think??

#1. is going to be your best option.

#2. Won't work if they are tweekers, they could care less if it is covered in poo

#3. From what I've been hearing, they have just been using sawzalls to get them off. So locking nuts wouldn't help.

Some other options:

A. Trunk Monkey

B. Full Belly Skid

I did see a news report that suggested a weld to connect the converter and pipe. $20 weld to protect a few hundred dollar part. Sawzals are loud but if the crooks are using one a weld won't help much:( Stopping the recycling is probably the best solution.

I've seen a couple of these removed from vehicles parked on the street in my area.

Tweakers out here are stealing anything and everything and being nailed down, welded down, bolted down, doesn't matter. I'm somewhat involved in railroads and trains are a big target. Lots of copper inside the engine compartment, copper cables to the traction motors, brass horns, bearings the works.

I'm seeing a lot of historical structures and equipment getting destroyed by these idiots and it really frustrates me.

To me the problem is almost entirely the recyclers. That's where it could be solved, but they're making money, so why would they question all this scrap metal they're getting. The other problem is scrap is one of America's biggest exports. We don't build much of anything anymore, but China sure loves our scrap and export, literally, by the boat load, so the business is big money right now.

Pawn shops used to be a big problem, but then cities came in and regulated the hell out of them and now theives don't sell to Pawn shops anymore because their pictures are taken when they bring stuff in, etc. Same thing should happen to recyclers, IMO.

The destruction these thieves are causing and the money they are costing innocent people is staggering.

I agree man, good post.

In the mean time, I'm going lower my 4runner, recycle my 4wd parts and buy some 20's...

My fj60 cat is welded and above a very greasy skid plate. :D I imagine the 4 runners are being targeted because the cats hang down so are easy to spot and are bolted on.

Trunk monkey will never become obsolete! :shakin:

Tweekers sell the cat's for good money because of the platinum they contain....

...But I got something for anyone caught under my rig with a sawzall... say hello to my little friend!

Forum Busted Some Criminals!!

:gunt:

Well not me personally, yesterday I posted the same stories on toyota120.com to get their thoughts on the situation.

As it turns one of the members told his brother (tacoma owner) about the cat's being stolen and he followed some dude with a truck full of cats to a recycling place and called the police. Everybody got busted and the cops thanked him for the lead!!
