Trailer Insurance?

How do you guys insure your trailers? If stolen from your driveway, does Homeowners Insurance cover it? If stolen away from home or if you are in an auto accident, does your car insurance automatically extend to the trailer?

How is it valued? I've put a lot of $ into mine so far and many of you have invested far more than me.

Curious to see what you guys have done, particularly through mainstream insurers like Allstate and State Farm. Or is there a specialty insurer our friends from AT recommend?

Thx.

While driving (at least with my liberty mutual) its covered under you car insurance for liability.

I haven't found/ or looked for a way to cover it when its not attached to the Jeep. During that time its locked in the garage :)

We have RV America/American Modern Insurance Group. They insure RV's (All Kinds), Motorcycles, Watercraft, Snowmobiles, etc.. We are insured for new trailer replacement w/an additional $5,000.00 or new replacement value on extra gear carried inside/unattached. (Example: Fold/roll-up solar panels)

Your spot on.....

In tow....covered liability only.....Stored on my property....Covered under my home owners policy....

Trailers that have been bought from AT, and etc will come with a VIN which is very easy to get insurance.

But.....

With alot of people around here building up their trailers....Most of the old military trailers don't have a VIN numbers. This also goes with ground up builds as well.

I was told by my insurance that i must have a VIN number to get a policy for my trailer. So i need to jump through all the hoops to get her a VIN and plated.

Then i can get more insurance for her.

Hope this helps!

With State Farm, I have full coverage for the trailer itself and contents against damage/theft/etc. Liability is covered by the policy on my tow vehicle.

Here in IL, you can get a VIN and title....just call it a homemade trailer. I have done it for 2 trailers that I have purchased for my landscaping company, original owners lost the title.

I have State Farm and my Conqueror Compact is insured from theft/vandalism/damage... I think I pay about $5.00 per month and it is insured for $15,000

Have rider added to you vehicle insurance policy.

Ditto. That's what I do with Farmers. even had a rider for my "truck canopy" a few years ago when i still had it.
little cargo trailer: rider
big flatty to haul vehicles on: rider

everything I own that moves has a rider. it's not worth the risk not having it, adding a rider is dirt cheap.

I have a separate policy to cover my KK (and my AT Cahser before) for anytime it's not attached to a tow vehicle. Like when left unattended in a camp spot. Depending on what you have, your home owner's policy might not be enough to cover an expensive trailer when parked at home. They are vehicles and I think having a separate policy or rider specifically for the trailer is best if you have lots to lose.

This is how I do it as well.

X2

I use Allstate. Added the trailer no problem and covered it as far as theft/vanalism/ damage, etc.. Regardless of where it is parked.

Liability is covered by the tow vehicle.

Ran me $60 or $70 bucks a year. And I insured it for enough to cover all the contents of the trailer as well.

Thanks for all of the advice...

I was able to insure it through State Farm with a $250 deductible for only $32 a year. Appreciate everyone's advice.
