Installation of Rear Platform

A little while back we removed the rear seats and started working on a plywood platform. Today we finally installed it.

We splurged a bit on 1/4" aluminum angle-iron for the support. :)

My father-in-law gave me a hand - as usual. Most of this stuff would not be possible without his help...

And here's the finished platform, including tie-downs.

All buttoned-up. :)

Tell me about that squeek. I had a squeek that would happen on acceleration/deceleration in the front, I assumed it was the front suspension, but it turned out to be a clutch part, warranty fix.

So, no more back seats, or do the mount to the platform now? Is the platform so you can sleep in it?

Nope, the platform is strictly for hauling stuff -- dog training stuff, off-road stuff, canoe-camping stuff, etc., etc. :)

Carnage at the Vermont Jeep Jamboree...

This past week-end, I attended the 2nd Annual Vermont Jeep Jamboree. Everything was going well... Melanie drove an easy trail on Friday, and I drove a more intermediate trail (the "No Name" trail, rated 5-7 I think) on Saturday. It rained a little bit in the morning - just enough to make things a little more interesting. The trails would snake around some trees and boulders. There was some rubbing against the rock rails and skid plates, but nothing serious. The roof rack added a degree of difficulty because we had to watch the off-camber stuff (we get wider as the top swings out). But then in the afternoon, we had a kind of tropical down-poor with hail. It came down like a bathroom shower for several minutes. We threw on the windows and jumped inside the Jeep to change into our rain gear. When we got out, the whole thing turned into a winch fest. The soil was a kind of clay / dark earth mix with dead leaves and roots. The tires would clog up and/or you'd end up digging ruts. After winching up a hill and looking at the way down, I asked the guide if we should winch down too. He said two other Jeeps had managed it, and his winch didn't hold properly anyway. With the Jeep pointed downhill, I didn't think of turning around and using my own winch to backup down the hill (as someone else did later). So, I said ok and headed down. Not a good idea. I was significantly heavier than pretty much any other Jeep there, and I later found out the previous Jeeps had barely kept control anyway. I tried to keep the wheels turning, and even gave it some gas when I saw I wasn't veering enough to avoid the tree. Which I didn't. Maybe a good thing too, because the ditch at the bottom might have flattened my front-end and set off the air bags. As it is, I have to replace my AEV bumper, grill, ALL the fender's various pieces, AND do some minor body work to straighten the hood and quarter panel. I'm hoping a "no paint" body shop up north will be able to pop everything back into shape. All in all, I'm hoping to stay under $3k for the whole repair.

Several people approached me afterwards expressing concern about the lack of 'attention' by the trail guide. In the end, the decision was mine. I took the decision to go down the hill. I could have turned to the guide and said "I'm going to winch down" instead of "Should I winch down?". Considering this was only the 2nd year for this Jeep Jamboree, I think inexperience on my part, and that of the guides, led to this situation. But ultimately the responsibility lays squarely on my own shoulders.

Ok, so you want pictures, right? I should mention that it was very dark after the storm, so the quality of these isn't great, but it gives you an idea...

Here's a shot after the impact:

Afterwards, setting up a snatch strap in the rear and winch w/ snatch block on the front to straighten out the bumper:

And the shot of the carnage after getting back to the parking lot:

The _real_ downside to this is I now have to waste time fixing stuff instead of improving my Jeep. So the 2nd battery and air tank will have to wait a bit longer. I'm really hoping to get those body panels looking like new. We're driving up to the body shop later this evening for their opinion. They're supposed to be really good, and won somekind of award in Florida earlier this year, so we'll see.

ouch it even tweaked the bumper! Very nice build by the way.

One question with it being parked on the street are you not afraid of theft?

Looks good with a little carnage!! Sorta makes ya proud that you actually use it for what you built it for, huh ?

It'll buff out. ;)

Actually, it doesn't look that bad. Now would be the perfect time to upgrade your fender flares...maybe some Bushwacker pocket style flares, or some Xenon flat fender flares.

I think the only bad thing is the bumper getting tweaked. Personally, I wouldn't sweat dents/scratches...that's just part of the game. If you are going to be wheeling that thing on a regular basis, chances are you'll fix a tent or scratch and then dent or scratch that same spot later. I know people like their vehicles to look good when not on the trail, but a little carnage to show you wheel it will give you some props from off-road enthusiasts who see your Jeep around town. Also, a little carnage might detour some idiot from wanting to steal it.

My motto is, it's not a scratch, it's a scar! :D

In case anyone is following this, it looks like I might be able to restore everything to as-new or better. Here's what's in the works...

- The whole fender flare, grill, clips, etc. are on the way from Mopar. Total cost is close to $500.

- A new AEV bumper is on the way too. I tried getting _just_ the bumper -- no mounts, crush cans, grill, etc. -- but the best AEV could do is exclude the winch mount for a $200 savings. Oh well.

- We have an appointment on August 6th to have the fender un-dented, along with some other small dents here and there that we picked up over the last year.

- I contacted AEV and they should have an OEM Jeep Green Metallic hood from a client's Jeep that upgraded their hood to AEV's "heat reduction" hood. I'm still waiting for shipping costs etc. It should be a lot cheaper than buying a new OEM hood ($220) and having it painted.

- And what the hell, I need a bit of a gift for doing all this crap, so I'm ordering an Expedition One rear bumper. The design connects the tire carrier with the tailgate, so they open as one. Pretty slick. They don't have a jerrycan mount though, so I may have to fab something eventually.

- Oh, and just to make sure I have some additional tools on-hand next time this happens, I bought two sets of Diamond Heavy Duty tire chains from tirechain.com. :)

Glad to hear you're making out okay. I did the Jamboree in West Virginia (I think the weekend before the VT one actually) and there were several damaged ones. It was my first one and I was a little surprised with the trail guides, they seemed kind of hit or miss.

You know when things are going your way and everything falls into place naturally, without any effort?

And then there's the opposite of that...

Here's my new hood:

IMG00019.jpg

It was a "take off" from AEV which they gave me for FREE. So how do you go about replacing something hard to find that was free? Yup, I might be screwed.

I'm confused...is there something wrong with it? Did it get damaged during shipping?

If it was damaged during shipping, the the shipping company will cover the cost of replacement ($700 - $800 for the AEV heat reduction hood, I believe). Well, that is, if it was insured...but I'm guessing it was.

The fact that you got it for free doesn't have anything to do with them damaging the hood during transit.

Yeah, it looks like some tires got stacked on it, or dropped on it. It's mostly flat now. It's a little frustrating, but we'll see what happens...

Sucks to hear about your tree mishap.... But, shouldn't an expensive aftermarket bumper protect all that stuff?

Mate that is one of the best looking JKs I've seen! awesome work on a quality build up.

Unfortunate about the tree mishap but its great to see it being wheeled and used for what it was built for!
