U.P. Overland 2009

Well, we got the first scouting for next year's trip done. It is promising to be a pretty incredible region for a variety of reasons. Some teaser shots here....

Holy hundreds of miles of unmapped, un-GPS'd logging roads!!

Are you guys sticking with the late August time frame like previous years, or is there a chance it might get moved back a few weeks?

We will be actually bumping it forward one week for the reason of avoiding overlapping work dates for people in the education field. The exact dates are still under discussion but it will likely begin one weekend earlier with an event in Marquette then roll out from there. There are truly are no shortage of route options and possibilities at this point.

I just drove through the U.P. for the first time, (currently in Canada). We caught the fall colors in all their splendor. I plan on one day meeting up with you guys to attend a U.P Overland Trip. My wife's family is from Grand Rapids and we visit at least once a year. We also have some friends in Naubinway. Even if I have to drive from CA I'm going to attend at some point in the future!!

Another San Diegan! My wife and I moved out to Chicago from SD last year. The UP reminds us a lot more of the SoCal mountains or NorCal. It's nice to get up there away from the flatness.

Yes, it was amazing!! I can't wait to go in the summer, it was a little chilly for me (30's). Hey I just moved back from Hawaii :snorkel:

Used to live in Harvey, MI on Lake Superior and worked in Negaunee when Simmons Airlines (American Eagle) was there and loved it. Good hunting lots of off-road driving around on logging roads, kind of miss the area. moved away in 1992. You have to listen to "Da Yoopers" and eat "Pasties", try Jean Kay's in Marquette or Red Onion in Negaunee, if either are still in business.

Jean Kay's was still open. Kristian recommended them to us and they were awesome!

Yep, Jean Kay's is just a block from my house. For a number of years they had new owners and the pasties weren't as good. The son of Jean Kay herself bought the shop back and went back to using his mother's old recipes and the pasties are very authentic again as of a few years ago. Good winter food for sure!

Does anyone have the .kml or .gpx files from this trip?

Also, can someone from this area tell me what the roads/trails of UP will look like the first week of May? Will things be thawed by then?

I'll be up in Wisconsin for work and would like to take a week and explore the UP. Any info/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the super delayed response. First off, yes there were a couple of members who were sharing .gpx files from the trip. PM me and I'll try to put you in touch with them if you are interested. First week of May is a tough one in the UP. One thing you can count on for sure is mud, and alot of it. On many trails there is still snow pack as well which will make them impassibly deep in many spots. The lower elevation locations that are closer to Lake Superior will be your best chances for driveable trails but again they will be very messy. Typically the trails don't really dry out till well into June but I've come across snow still in early June, it all depends on the weather in the spring. Even the dirt roads could be a gamble in some areas. The Yellow Dog Plains (AAA road and Northwestern Rd) Should likely be passable and open by then and make for a cool adventure. I think the trails to the east where it is more sandy would make for the best bet versus the rockier and muddier trails to the west of Marquette.
