Upgrading to 04 DII should I bother???

Until you find a d1 shifter you can bend a piece of 1/8" steel into a CDL lever. Cost is dirt cheap and the instructions are online. The "handle" can be operated outside the truck from the side of the truck. No getting dirty.

Stick with what you have and upgrade as needed.

The only mechanical difference between your truck and the 04 DII is the 4.6 block

The block (and heads) are identical. A 4.6 is just a stroker 4.0.

And the OPs mention of doing a "facelift" on a pre '03 Disco 2 is pure madness and/or mall crawling. No one interested in durability or trail worthiness will swap glass headlights for plastic.

Also, salvage truck that requires nationalization: RUN AWAY.
