Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

Hi Cobble - I really enjoyed this thread. I'm plotting a similar setup. Quick question - what is the height of your Jeep with the Ursa top closed? I have a 7ft garage and want to make something like this could fit.

I'll check. I have a 3" lift, running 20" 35's, and it will not fit into the garage. I think the opening to my garage is right around 7' as well.

John, thanks for letting me stop by and check out the camper. It will only make my decision more difficult as I liked the smaller j30 more than the habitat in some ways, but I really appreciate your time!

Oh and maybe you've seen this, but just if not....

I had seen this in my Overland journal, but kind of forgot about it until I came across it again looking for another article.

How did the Habitat look, or did you get a chance to take a look at it?

Some sort of lost...
I did get to check out the Habitat, but decided that the J30 makes more sense for us. I'm not sure the habitat would work well for me because it would be difficult to dry out, and could often be put away wet and left for three weeks or more while I'm at work. The habitat is an awesome product, but I just think the J30 will work better for my intended use.

I edited my post as I think I worded something incorrectly, and didn't intend to bash the Habitat or the guys at AT. When I spoke to John at Ursa Minor, he seemed a lot more confident in build/delivery lead time. Mario at AT was upfront about having a longer lead time, but they are still working to build some pre-orders from some time ago so I don't know what this truly means for potential delivery lead times.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to see both products, as I was leaning more toward the Habitat until I saw both first hand. I wish I would have had the chance to meet Mario in person and see his Habitat rather than the one that I saw. I think some things were missed/overlooked on it when it was first built. The owner said that AT was going to fix the items for him for as well and make things right.

Just a note. Be patient when/if you order from Ursa. They are a small shop and the times can get moved w/short notice. Can be frustrating but worth the wait.

Anyone know how much weight a J30 adds to a Jeep JKU? Guess it would depend on whether you start with a hard or soft top... How much cargo capacity would be left on a JKU with the J30?

Also - what is the overall exterior height with the top opened?

Thanks!

For the habitat the have said ~100lbs more than a normal hard top and I would say based off of design that is about the same for the J30 (hardtops are ~130 (95lbs back+30 freedom panels). AT's website says 220lbs total for the Habitat/J180. Cargo capacity is the same as with a hardtop, there is no intrusion into the interior of the jeep. I went from a softop to the J30 and actually have more space now since I can stuff items up against the wall of the hardtop. Not sure on the height, the next time I have it open I will measure.

According to their site, the weights are as follows: "The gross weight of the J30 is approximately 200 lbs, the J180 is close to 300 lbs."

Great pics...in the linked article, thanks Chip.

Honestly for the $5250 base price this is a real value added to a really nice platform. Looking at what a Dormobile conversion or something in the same range adds to a Defender or what the Germans charge to spiff up a Landcruiser this is a steal. For less than the cost of many of the off-road trailers out there you get a sleep inside setup that is clean & functional.

I also like that they are delivering product and we are getting to enjoy the trip reports now and see these in action.

Wondering Wanderer
I was looking at a ujoint 4x4 diesel van to convert but an XJ and J30 RTT is making a lot of sense... Plus the wifey doesnt want to be seen sleeping in a van... down by the river

These are great but what I would love to see is a pop-top for the larger Prius V. Won't crawl over rocks but great gas mileage and the air conditioner runs off the big battery. Gas engine kicks on every so often to charge up battery so can run air con all night while sleeping. Like the idea so much will soon be converting a V to a little camper.
