Hey goin camping it was good talking to you. I got my Gate with less that 10 minutes before boarding.

You been out in Mojave yet since we talked?
I am trying to see if I can get over there this month to drive the lenght of Atkins Mine road but at the moment it seems life is getting in the way. So it maybe a last minute trip.

I wondered if you were going to make your flight. Happy to hear you did.

Indeed, I have been putting around the Mojave since we met. Not as much as I would like but every month to six weeks I sneak away. Once we get closer to Spring I'll be wandering the area between Baker and the NV border. Whole new area for me.

Just googled the Atkins mine Rd. I will do that one!

Johns advice for the SPOD was to have it already installed when the put the top on. It looks like the top would have to be lifted some to get to the loop where the SPOD attaches too. I don't have an SPOD to look at but the switch housing may need to be trimed.

I installed my sPod after the top, no real issues. The space for your fingers is a tad tighter, but it is totally possible. Just an FYI to those wondering.

Also, any wiring that needs to be done in the top, have UM do it. Tanking the top apart to pull wires is well worth the fee they charge unless you value you time at $0/hr and don't care if you damage anything.

Well I did order my J30 up. Should be about a month out. I'm excited!
Question for those of you with racks on top. Which type did you pick and why?
I didn't order one on mine, but it shouldn't be too late to have them add it on. I was considering doing this myself later, but now I'm thinking that having them seal up anything on the top would be better than me doing it afterwards.
So did you go with the stationary mounts (like the Thule Podium Bases, Yakima Landing Pad) or a rail system. I'm looking just having them put a rail system in so there is flexibility for what fits up top, but how much to you really adjust that space?
I'll likely only be placing ski's up there, but may get a basket at some point.

I had them put the Yakima on the top. Mounting points in the front, tracks in the rear. I didn't get the bars or anything, just the mounts for future proofing. Taking the inside liner out of the tent to drill holes etc. later is a big job, so avoid it if you can. In hindsight, I would ask for full length tracks if they could do it as I never use the front mount because the bars are so high when the mounting bracket is installed. Instead I use T bolts to attached unistrut to the rails. You can't put much weight up there and still lift the top, so the only thing I ever put up there is MaxTrax. If I'm hauling something heavier/bigger, I am in my truck.

People have been asking me about my ARB rear awning mount . here is a pic hope it helps.sorry if the pic is sideways? . I used L brackets with a bolt and wing nut thru the top near the corners it's very sturdy .i did not have to remove the headliner when drilling the two holes . what I like about it is when the season is over and the awning is removed their is no visible holes or brackets to the outside of the j30 when the top is closed . and installing or removing the ARB awning takes only a minute without tools. Hope this helps ..

I have finally finished reading all 122 pages of this thread. Lots of information on here. Thanks to everyone that has contributed.

I have a a few questions, but would like to start with one I don't believe was covered. I am very interested in this top. My usage for it will primarily be during hunting season and spring camping. I run topless most of the summer, but would throw it on for the occasional trip (once a month). My question is ........ Does the top have to be stored/supported in any certain way to prevent warping or any other ill effects when stowed away for extend periods?

Hell of a good question, Shooter - and welcome to the forum! I've been wondering that same thing. I'm intending to buy one of these once I actually take delivery of my JKU, but it will spend a not-insignificant amount of time in the garage.

I look forward to someone who knows chiming in with an answer....

Yeah, that was a big question I had as well. So much fun to run top-down on long weekend trips, but would be nice to have this top for week and longer explorations.
Hope someone is able to answer this.

Do it quick, that is the part of the enormous public lands area Obama just stole from the public.

nwoods I am not sure I follow what you are saying. Atkins Mine road is in the Northern part of Mojave National Preserve that was established in 1994.
So I am not sure how the creation of Castle Mountian National Monument and Mojave Trails National Monument made Mojave National Preserve and all of its back roads closed to the public.

TwoJeeps. I've not been able to find a very good map illustrating the boundaries of the new Mojave Trails Monument, but what I have seen sure looks like it includes Aikens. That, plus the entire intent of Monument status status portends a dim future for off road enthusiasts.

Concern over the long-term health of the deceptively delicate terrain spurred Obama to designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow and Castle Mountains monuments under the 1906 Antiquities Act, which authorizes presidents to create national monuments on federal land to protect "objects of historic and scientific interest."

J30 Storage

Does the top have to be stored/supported in any certain way to prevent warping or any other ill effects when stowed away for extend periods?

Generally, there should be no impact or damage from storing it, but a few things to keep in mind:
- There are soft foam tape gaskets around the sealing surfaces, so if you are putting it on sawhorses just avoid the flanges and header or have extra foam tape ready at reinstallation.
- If the supports are against the headlining or carpet, it may flatten out the felt over time, and that pile may need to be brushed out when you’ve reinstalled it.
- If you have the optional map pockets, make sure there’s nothing in the pockets if the support will be there. if you have the rear load bay lights avoid positioning a sawhorse right on the LEDs.
- The flat top of the camper once off the Jeep becomes an attractive surface for storing stuff, just don’t put any really heavy things on it right in the middle.
- If you will have it on/off frequently, I would recommend having a hoist system set up, and perhaps dedicated custom sawhorses or a dolly on wheels made up so you can move it around once it’s off the Jeep.
- The inlets on the sides are spaced out from the center of gravity, so it is possible to mount either grab bars or lifting plates there for fast removal.
Thanks! John
