Van vs Truck Camper

Absolutely! For me the best part is when I'm high on some ridge looking down into a deep canyon and one of those F-18s comes barreling down through the canyon and I'm looking DOWN onto the jet below me. Now that's cool! Even watching them bomb one of their targets is neat. How many people get to see something like that?

Bravo 20 in that picture is live fire, a great place to camp nearby and watch, bravo 17 in Dixie Valley is all virtual target practice but still a lot of fun to watch.

Back in the 90's they flew the tomcats, I hated the movie but loved camping and watching the F-14's do their job, very beautiful bird!

Back on topic. (Although I believe the OP already got a Transit)

Van vs Truck camper. Why debate? Just get a van truck and have both!

For those that just can't make a decision. Or, you like the space and convenience of both.

me when I see photos, places and setups like this

What is it that you don't like about this?

That's a great area to camp, and at certain times you get to watch fighter jets from the NAS Fallon top gun program do their training, very entertaining and sometimes they use you as a static target, literally flying right over your head.
If you havent been to StarWars canyon coming out of Death Valley, its pretty interesting too. You can look down and straight across at the fighters coming up through it.

The problem is they like to put weapons lock on vehicles down in the flats and buzz you at a ridiculously low ceiling. Had that happen once there when I was stopped. Another time somewhere around Eureka dunes area my radar detector (remember when we had simpler rigs that could go fast enough you needed those😅) lit up like a Christmas tree while I was driving. While I was trying figure out what the heck was causing that a fighter just about blew me off the road. Those guys are, or used to be, nuts!

I have been to star wars canyon, it was an awesome week with lots of fighters doing their thing, same way with the top gun program, they use vehicles as virtual targets, cool times are when you are driving down the road and they do flyby attacks right over the top of you then peel off at high speeds, it's an awesome experience to be part of.

Are they just messing with the people, or they have to do that for some safety reasons?

It's good training for them, in my experiences they look for camp and use it to learn how to attack hidden enemies, and when you are driving it's just a different attack training, plus I imagine they think it's great fun doing it, gawd knows I would!

Scared the p*** outta me the first time it happened …come to think the 2nd time too!😱 They are very good at sneaking up on you and the first thing you know theres this crazy ear splitting roar and the jet fills up the windshield as they go past.

That's part of the fun, I love knowing that my rigs, parked and moving, are helping this nation train it's defenders, and getting a front row seat for free is even better.
