Vermont and The Adirondacks

My girlfriend, dog and I finished up some VT and Adirondack Mountains exploring. We were out from 12/26 - 12/31. It was a little over 1000 miles round trip from SE PA. It turned out to be a good time overall, and I got the chance to test out some equipment.

We camped in the Adirondacks at a year round campground in Old Forge. It was a neat little town and the campground was nice, just a lot of snowmobilers all night long.

The dog hated being in the car so much and it was really detracting from our trip. We had her in the back inside her cage. We decided to stay in a hotel the next two nights in S. Burlington, VT. This enabled us to leave the dog in the hotel room while we went out into Burlington and the surrounding areas during the day. Burlington is a cool city as far as cities go. It doesn't feel all crazy and rushed like most cities do to me.
We then camped for two nights right outside of Stowe, VT. The owner of the place had to plow out a site for us. There was a good 16" of snow on the ground when we arrived, and we got another 6 - 8" during our two day stay. It's nice to actually get snow, as being from SE PA we have been deprived for the most part the last few years.

The dog finally calmed down and even seemed to enjoy camping in the snow. My girlfriend is a trooper for putting up with winter camping. It was a lot of fun, it just has certain challenges with the cold weather and limited hours of day.

I didn't get to do any real off roading, just a lot of snow driving. I purposely got into some deep stuff just for fun though. I saw some of the class IV roads, but they had very deep snow on them, and only snow mobile tracks. I stayed off of them not knowing the legality and the fact that we were alone.
I would have liked to boondock rather than paying to camp every night. This doesnt seem as easy to do as it was out west though. VT is quite a beautiful place and I look forward to going back sometime.

Nice Photos, cstamm81. Looks like a good time. There are good areas for dispersed camping in the Green Mountain National Forest, if you can get to them this time of year. You might be able to get into the Cooley Glen area and FR201.

Nice pics! Could you list out the route and points of interest? I would like to take a trip like that in the spring. Thanks.

Looks like you had a good time. Old Forge is a cool little town. Did you try out the Old Mill restaurant? Their duck in cherry sauce and barley beef soup are killer. At least you didn't have to worry about the black flies.

You have my admiration for the cold weather camping and great place to visit,,,,, but I am jealous of your tent...

How was the cold night in the Maggiolina??

The last two Septembers we spent some time on the two lane and NF roads of VT NH and the Adirondacks camping on the way to Maine. The larger mountains of NH has always had me overlooking VT...
I found Vermont to have better NF road access than NH and the more time I spend there the more I want to go back, the towns seem very rural and non commercial...

07' was my first time to the Adirondacks and I was impressed at how old some of the camping areas are. The place is huge and seemed kind of forgotten to the main stream vacationer.........

Some great VT roadside cuisine............

That picture is pretty wild. Great thread.

What a wonderful testament for the Maggiolina and kudos to you 3 for gutting it out in such chilly conditions. The short days of winter do make outings a bit of a challenge, but it looks like you had a fun time in a great outfit.

And ditto on Vermont. One of the prettiest states that gets the least amount of attention. One of the real jewels in New England's crown.

Nice thread. I would also like to know more about your tour points for when we get back to New England. Its a very beautiful area there.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
KevinNY, I am going to try to get back there in the summer. I still have to try to make it to Man Of Kent with you. I had some ridiculously awesome beer there.
It is definitely nice to not have to worry about insects, one thing I always like about cold weather camping and backpacking. The drivers of the other cars in that one pic were just looking at me like what the heck is that guy doing as I was trying to drive up some 10 foot snow piles. That is one thing I didn't like though. Tons of NYC and NJ visitors spending gobs of money to ski up in that area. Not bunching everyone who lives there into a group, it just seems a lot of people have a certain shall we call it flair about them.
The Maggiolina defintely holds body heat well. It had to be at least 10 degrees warmer inside the tent. I tried heating it the first night with a small propane heater, but as soon as I opened the door to leave it out for the night, all of the heat escaped. If I could come up with a safe way to have a heat source at night I would be set for way colder temps. I recorded a temp of 28 degrees inside the tent one night. Actually I would go when it's much colder regardless, but I'm not sure the girlfriend or the dog would be coming with on that one.
I would love to hook up with some other people in the spring or fall and run some of the class IV roads up there. That would be a blast for sure.
I will try and post up a route and points of interest. FYI I got a ton of info from a few guys (KevinNY, dieselcruiserhead, etc) in this thread http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10026

here are some more pics for anyone interested: http://cstamm.smugmug.com/gallery/4134818#P-1-16

Thanks for an update on the cold night in the Maggiolina......

Those "people" were scarce in early September, I mostly ran into friendly Harley people on the two lane roads and stops. I have seen New England "ablaze" in color many times and choose early Sept to avoid those "People Peeping", and no bugs or kids...

I stayed in the ski areas of VT and NH X-mas week in 2002. (I understand) Those "People" are why I hide in the NF campgrounds, I just don't have the courage to do it in the winter.......

Looks fun. VT is one of my favorite states in the US. It would be one of the few places that I'd consider living if I had to relocate. Ironically, I happen to be there right now killing some time for a few days. Amazing how much snow melted away here, in NH, and in Maine since last Monday. We lost about 4 feet of snow at Sugar Loaf in 3 days time while I was there. Sucks!
