My girlfriend, dog and I finished up some VT and Adirondack Mountains exploring. We were out from 12/26 - 12/31. It was a little over 1000 miles round trip from SE PA. It turned out to be a good time overall, and I got the chance to test out some equipment.
We camped in the Adirondacks at a year round campground in Old Forge. It was a neat little town and the campground was nice, just a lot of snowmobilers all night long.
The dog hated being in the car so much and it was really detracting from our trip. We had her in the back inside her cage. We decided to stay in a hotel the next two nights in S. Burlington, VT. This enabled us to leave the dog in the hotel room while we went out into Burlington and the surrounding areas during the day. Burlington is a cool city as far as cities go. It doesn't feel all crazy and rushed like most cities do to me.
We then camped for two nights right outside of Stowe, VT. The owner of the place had to plow out a site for us. There was a good 16" of snow on the ground when we arrived, and we got another 6 - 8" during our two day stay. It's nice to actually get snow, as being from SE PA we have been deprived for the most part the last few years.
The dog finally calmed down and even seemed to enjoy camping in the snow. My girlfriend is a trooper for putting up with winter camping. It was a lot of fun, it just has certain challenges with the cold weather and limited hours of day.
I didn't get to do any real off roading, just a lot of snow driving. I purposely got into some deep stuff just for fun though. I saw some of the class IV roads, but they had very deep snow on them, and only snow mobile tracks. I stayed off of them not knowing the legality and the fact that we were alone.
I would have liked to boondock rather than paying to camp every night. This doesnt seem as easy to do as it was out west though. VT is quite a beautiful place and I look forward to going back sometime.
