Very cool! The 2013 edition of the rally is scheduled for 25 Jan to 8 Feb 2013.
Here's the website for the rally: http://www.budapestbamako.org/en
The organizers have arranged for both racing teams and touring group to participate.
This quote say a lot about the spirit of this rally: "The 2011 Budapest-Bamako proudly embraces the global economic crisis. We believe that if you can't afford a decent car, you can't afford the entry fee. So if you drive industrial trash or any old beat up jalopy, you are in for free. Drive a funny car, an ambulance, a fire engine, a car/motorcycle that's older than 30 years and is generally unsuitable for such a journey and you are in for free."
One aspect of the rally is charitable work and donations that benefits the people of Mauritania and Mali.
There was a guy that did something similar on a Yamaha R1 which is the equivalent of a Ferrari in the sport bike world. Then again, some guy did it in a Porsche 944...and then there was that young couple fresh out of college that went all the way to South America on a Ninja 250- and I hardly get to leave my office chair lol
Amazing and crazy at the same time! I have done that on a "proper" enduro and it was tough, doing it on a vespa is CRAZY! But I'm sure those guys have some amazing stories to tell
