Had an 89 240 with no troubles in 160k miles other than a transmission giving out at 81k! Everyone told me it was really unusual as they are nearly bulletproof. Replaced the tranny and went along another 80k without issue.

Had a 95 850 wagon (non-turbo) that was very reliable and fun to drive.

My parent's have an 01 S80 T6 that has cost them close to $9k in repairs over the last 4 years and it only has 102k miles on it.

My brother-in-law had an 03 XC70 that was fairly reliable until the 65k mark and then it seemed to fall apart on a monthly basis and this is a guy who is religious about maintenance.

YMMV

I think you are pretty safe with a 240, 740 or 940 series Volvos. We had a 240, 245, 940 all at the same time when I was growing up. I think the key for the older ones is finding a good indy mechanic. I think any model after the 850 is questionable from what I have seen and read.

My wife and I just took a look at the Volvo dealership. The had an 03 Cross Country in the used fleet. It had 128000 miles on it. The Sales man told me it had a brand new motor in it. The last one died on a test drive.. That sounded pretty fishy to me. It did drive incredibly well. Actually one of the most sound and tight cars i have ever driven. They wanted 9000 for it. We declined I figured if the motor died that early the trans might be next.
