Wanted: 1985 Toyota PU

Scott Brady

Founder
Looking for a near-perfect 1985 4wd Toyota PU with a 22RE and 5-speed. Must have AC, and would prefer either a long-bed or one with the xtra-cab.

Ultra-low mileage and clean a must. We have some time to be patient.

Oh, and of course....

White :archaeolo (but tan would be a-ight)

It would be next to impossible to find a pickup with a 22R-E from 1984 and it's only marginally easier to find a nice one from 1985. Also the 22R-E after 8/84 (i.e. laser block 22R engines) is a better engine. Even better is the 1989 and up, but that's due to the EFI system and not the long block, so a '85-'88 22R-E can be made into a 1989+ by only bolting on external stuff, intake, upper plenum, throttle body, AFM, etc. The early 22R's only advantage is the double row timing chain and that can be adapted to the late 22R if you want (but that means an A/C bracket headache). Oh and an early 22R block can take a 20R head easily.

A bit pricey but here you go! Probably about as close to what you are looking for.

Sweet. That's sort another thing that Scott may have to deal with, the color. In 1985 the 22R-E was only available in the SR5 trucks and generally in XtraCab ones. Back then the EFI was most definitely an upgrade and it was an optional upgrade on the top package. As a result anyone buying the top Hilux in 1985 would also generally not be getting the plain Jane white. It's funny, the ones I know of personally are the dark blue and the other flaming chili red. There do exist white or tan, but by far the bulk of the white and tan 1985 trucks are gonna be 22R. I'd personally focus on a solid frame and body, swapping in a 1989+ 22R-E, but that's me...

That said, right here in Denver (22R-E tan with 58K miles):

Downside is it's $8,000 and a regular cab, short box
Edit: Bergger beat me to this one...

And a beater 1985 with a 22R-E

He's really proud of it, eh? Let me know if you need someone to poke around or drive it for a day or year or two.

Good Lord man! You sure do like to look for the proverbial needle in a haystack don't ya! :) Good luck finding what you're searching for! Hopefully this build will be just as nice as your other builds. What are the plans for it if I might ask? I'm sure it will come out sooner or later anyway... :friday: :D
