Well, let the fun begin! A SLOW E-350 build...

Hello,

This is my first "real post" so bear with me as I figure this stuff out and feel free to "educate" me. Thanks to everyone here for the inspiration to build our own camping van!

After a lot of searching and some deal breakers, we finally came across a 2002 Ford E-350 that will slowly(as funds allow) be turned into our family daily driver, camping van, fire wood getting, do it all wagon. We bought the van in San Diego after having a friend look at it for me. My wife and I flew to San Diego and made the trip back to Idaho with it.

We have a goal that in 5 years my wife, our 2 kids, and I will travel Central America for a short period of time. The van will serve as our home on the road for that adventure. Therefore, I have a lot of work to do :Wow1: Now, this project will not happen fast by any means. I will be completing things as funds are available, but with 5 years being the deadline.

The game plan:

First things first...convert to 4x4 with a UJOR kit. Going 4" to run 33" tires. We live in the mountains with lots of snow and since the van will also serve as my daily driver, I need 4wd. The other reason, I had to sell my one of my Jeeps to fund the van and I don't want to give up the freedom 4wd offers. Second thing is to add a camping top. At the moment we are leaning towards a fiberglass high top, but by the time it happens, who knows. We go back and forth on a fixed high top or the Colorado Camper Van pop top. I have some saving to do before we get there though. After that, build the interior into a comfortable travel and camp space for the family.

Needless to say I am looking for a Dana 60 and transfer case out of a Super Duty. So if you hear of any good deals, let me know!

Nice!!!!!!!! What a beauty. Looks just like the 99 I'm converting right now. Consider going up 6" on 35's. I think it looks better on the EB vans, and the higher departure angle will help off road.

Thanks Chris! I saw pictures of that 99...it's gonna be saweet! I absolutely 100% agree with you on all accounts with the 6" on 35"ers. Love the look and the extra clearance and departure angle would be priceless with all the overhang out back. I am gonna stick with the 4" on 33s and I will explain why...

With this build, I am going to go somewhat practical and tame compared to what I usually do with my rigs. With the goal being a trip through other countries, I don't want to stick out too much. I think with 35's, we would stick out like a sore thumb and it would up our chances of being a target for theft, vandalism, etc. Now I know we will still stick out being gringos on 33's, but I would rather not up the chances whenever possible. The other reason is that the van in only a V8. Ya, I know, weak sauce. It is going to force me to go as light weight as possible with a camper van, haha! The 35's would add more rolling resistance and weight for the poor little 5.4. And the last thing being, of course, cost. Stepping up to a 6" on 35's does add a bit more cost initially and down the road with replacement tires.

Please feel free to correct me if my thinking is way off though! I do respect your opinion!

Thanks again Chris,
Dan

I hear ya, didn't realize it was a 5.4. 33's with some 4.10's should work well. Maybe even 4.56....

UJOR kit is in!

Well, about ready to get started. UJOR 4" kit is in and just picked up some axles and transfer case. Found out the van came with a semi-float rear end and couldn't justify spending the money to re-gear that axle. With the help of a friend, I ended up with a Dana 60 FF out of another van and a Dana 60 out of a 2004 Super Duty both with 4.10 gears along with a 271 t-case. Now just to find the time to dig in...

P.S. Chris at UJOR is awesome! Super helpful with questions and very quick to respond. Highly recommend doing business with him!

Gonejpn2,

You might want to check your lug bolt patterns between those two axles. Chris @ Ujoint would be the authority, but I believe the E platforms maintained the 8x6.5" bolt patter while the F platforms went to 8x165mm after MY99. Nice looking van, just something to check before you get too far.

4x4 Phase 1

So I was able to take advantage of some time off during spring break and start on the 4x4 conversion! So far so good! I hope to have it on the ground and on the road tomorrow. I will tackle the tranny and fuel tank at a later date, but for now it's well on it's way!
