What a bunch of San Diego HAMS!!

Gear

Explorer, Overland Certified OC0020
Who - 6 Expedition Portal Members.
What - Palomar Amateur Radio Club Meeting.
When - Held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Where - North County, San Diego.
Why - Support further education of our Ham license.

A quick run down of the event. We started off with a fine diner at Claim Jumper. Got to review our travel plans and enjoy small talk. Followed up with a 7:00 pm meeting at the Carlsbad Safety Center. The topic for the night was "I'm from the Government (Planning Department) and I'm here to help you!". Came down to a nice presentation on CC&R's and Ham related issues.

Well I just thought I would post this up as a monthly avenue for San Diego Expediton Portal members to get out and enjoy each others company. The PARC(Palomar Amateur Radio Club) meets on the first Wednesday of each month. I will post more about the next meeting as the information becomes available.

Had a great time yesterday on the Spring Flower Fling!

Gear loaned me one of his hand held 2 Meter radio's.....so I could also hear the 2 Meter dudes chat.

He also had his CB Radio going on channel 4 so we could talk.

It got really funny at one point.............

I was talking to Gear on my CB Radio.........and he was answering me on the 2Meter which I could listen to in my truck!

Thanks Justin! I enjoyed the 2 Meter introduction!

I had a great time with all of you!

And while I thought of it....might as well post it.

Justin........your CB Antenna is only putting out up to about 2 miles, and your recieve is no better (it's Not your radio!). I tried looking up some No Ground Plane Antenna info for you. I wonder if this might help some.

It was great meeting you all and I am looking forward to next month.

It was cool to go to the meeting as I was able to meet some of the folks that post on the Expo and folks that I hear on the radio (Harry Hodges, W6YOO – San Diego October 2007 fire net story). Note that listening to this fire net is what convinced me to go and get my amateur radio license.

I also enjoyed the topic as I am bound by a home owners association CC&R (I will need to get creative if I put up an antenna). The presenter made this topic fun and informative.

The meeting was also sad as I found out about the passing of two local hams: (from ARRL) Rod Dinkins "Many hams considered Dinkins, the author and developer of the Web site www.ac6v.com, to be the final word on anything to do with ham radio." and Harvey Hiller, K6QK. More information about these two silent keys is available in the PARC newsletter.

See you all there next month!

Me too! Thanks for showing us around.

Are you looking into becoming a licensed ham?

OK, it is plain to me the SoCal Hams are trying to put us NorCal Hams to shame. Just look how organized they are getting! Bet they even talk to each other on those radio thingies, W_6, this, N_6 that, K_6 blah blah ... (and it looks like they are having fun)

Come on, NorCal Hams, chime in!
