Ok thats what i thought, self doubt is a miserable condition:pROFSheriffHL: ! Im more in need of something with high capacity and deep discharging ability, although im loking into buying one of those Duracell jumpstart packs for emergency situations as back up. TO what length does anyone here go to keeping your batt cool? Ill be driving in Central America and cross teh equator so temp is bound to be a consideration!

Well odyssey puts metal jackets (on the MJ models) to help cut down on heat absorption. That's about all I do in Arizona (dry heat but 120F+ in the summer). I'd be interested in hearing if there are other lengths people have gone to.

I've bought 2 Optimas in the past 6 years. My Yellowtop crapped out after 26 months and just this past Sunday, the Redtop in my daughters Jeep crapped out....its not even 3 years old.

I've been running Odysseys in my Jeep for the past 4 years and haven't regreted it at all. They have proven to be a great purchase decision. Optimas = over priced junk in my opinion.

I just went to NAPA autoparts today to see what they had. They carry their brand deep cell which is made by DEKA. Did a little research and Deka seems to be a very very good brand. They just stocked up on em for RV season, the one I looked at I believe was a group 27 and had 87 AH and 170 MIN RC. At only $80!!! Think I might give this one a try. I just cant afford to drop 3 bills plus on a battery for running my fridge.

$80? That sounds TOO cheap.

I am guessing that is the standard battery and NOT the AGM, correct?

Deka makes both. If you are doing lots of fireroads or similar off roading, i STRONGLY suggest an AGM of some sort. I wasted $250 on 2 brand new die hard golds, first trip to baja (gnarly fire roads and some high speed driving), they were leaking from the top and corroded the front rad support and both tie downs! :(

Think thats expensive now? Think of the tow bill if it leaves your stranded 300 miles from no where

NOTE:This is coming from a guy that spent a very cold night in his jeep while his buddy went and fetched a new battery cause i couldnt afford to pay for the $500 tow!

Sorry if i am coming across a bit harsh on this, but i have been left high and dry more times than i care to admit from battery failures, either from my rig, or someone that was with us!!

I made the mistake twice trying to save $ on batteries, both times left me stranded far from home, NEVER again!

I heard this from Mud and thought I'd pass it along.

Enersys makes Odyssey batteries and now they're making Die Hard platinum batteries.

All of the DH models have the same specs as the odyssey's.

Die Hard Platinum batteries

Here is the press release for Sears/Enersys.
EnerSys Signs Multi-Year Contract to Provide Sears Holdings With Long-Life DieHard(R) Platinum BatteriesREADING, Pa. and HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EnerSys (NYSE: ENS), the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, today announced it has signed a multi- year contract with Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD) to manufacture and supply Sears with a newly categorized DieHard Platinum branded battery for aftermarket automotive and marine applications. DieHard is America's most preferred automotive battery, among those stating a preference.
Beginning in March, 2007, Sears Auto Centers will be the exclusive distribution channel for DieHard Platinum batteries. "By working with EnerSys on the new DieHard Platinum battery, we continue the legacy of innovation that was established with the original DieHard battery 40 years ago," said Rick Sawyer, vice president/general merchandise manager of Sears Auto Centers. "We're confident this new battery will live up to the DieHard brand name and that users will be pleased with its performance. These premium-grade batteries are designed for a longer life than traditional batteries, offer increased levels of safe operation, can withstand extreme heat and cold, and are durable for consumer automotive/marine applications. The DieHard Platinum battery will offer proven vibration resistance to the consumer market.
The new DieHard Platinum batteries have up to 28% more Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) than comparatively sized spiral Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries providing much more starting power to automobiles and boats, along with unmatched reserved capacity. These thin-plate pure-lead batteries will carry DieHard batteries' best-ever, free replacement warranty. See your local Sears store for written warranty details.
"We're thrilled to provide this high-end, durable DieHard Platinum version to consumers," said John Craig, chairman, president and chief executive officer of EnerSys. "This partnership represents a great opportunity for more users to benefit from our pure-lead technology products."
The DieHard Platinum batteries are manufactured in EnerSys' U.S. manufacturing facility in Warrensburg, Mo, where the first DieHard Platinum came off the production line today. They have a valve-regulated design that allows them to be installed in any orientation, except inverted, without spilling and the U.S. Department of Transportation has classified them as non- spillable for safe shipping.
For more information, contact Richard Zuidema, Executive Vice President, EnerSys, P.O. Box 14145, Reading, PA 19612-4145. Tel: 800/538-3627; Web site: EnerSys Home.

Thanks for the great news Mark! I have run many die hards in many different rigs without a single problem! (aside from a little leakage of one, but that was 100% my fault).

Looking at their specs, knowing they are made by the same folks as Odssey, and my great luck with Die Hards in the past, i am VERY tempted to go this way with my bats on the 100! Hmmmmm

Thanks For Posting!

I was about to buy an Odyssey 1700 to replace my primary battery in my 4Runner. If the Sears DH Pl line are the same design and manufaturer as the Odyssey then it seem like a beeter deal to go with the Sears option. Looks like lower price and easy access to warrany support if needed.

Am I missing something here?

I view this like the old JLB thing, who used to make speakers for many different companies. None of them were as good as the ones with the JBL label. They had tiers of quality that they would sell to others based on how much they spent.

I'd suspect that Sears is not going to have a market for the high end batteries like the 1700 and above. So Odyssey is reserving the hot stuff for their own label.

Both good points. I like the metal jacket and the known quality of the Odyssey 1700. Thanks for the input.

Just went to Sears and got some info and prices on the Die Hard Platinum. They look to be pretty good. Decided I am def going with a good battery. Its well worth the extra money invested.

EnerSys makes the Odyssey branded batteries. And the DieHard Platinum branded batteries. And the Trolling Thunder branded batteries. In fact, the Trolling Thunder label now falls under the Odyssey label.

I haven't seen the DieHard version in person yet, but the Trolling Thunder battery looked identical to the Odyssey's. Hard to say if the insides are the same but I'm willing to bet they are.

I wonder if Sears is able to sell them cheaper because they are buying in more quantity?
