What colors are best for expedition vehicles

That, and the fact that black is pretty close to impossible to keep looking good! I know the paint on my black truck looks terrible!

When I repaint, it's going to be Toyota's Sandstorm (or whatever they call it...)

white reflects all light but white

black aborbs all colors, and in turn the solar energy (heat) they possess

Actually, white is the reflection of all light. White is the combination of all visible colors [the colors that are separated out by a prism] in equal amounts.

A company I worked for did an Experiment on how vehicle color effects interior temperature. It was discovered that the difference in interior heat absorption based on vehicle color is negligible.

After leaving a White, Black, Red, Blue and Tan Chevrolet Malibu sitting in the sun on tarmac in northern Phoenix on a 112 degree July day for 7 hours, the temperatures inside of the cars varied by a combined 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit. The black car was actually 0.2 degrees cooler than the white car.

While black objects absorb heat faster, black objects also lose heat faster.

I remember a lot of race engines being painted black for this reason, why does black lose heat quicker?? and are we sure of that?? seems like it wouldn't matter for losing it, that that would be based on the conductive nature of the material i.e. metal gains and loses heat fast, wood doesn't, not color.

Yes, I'm sure of that.

All objects above 0K (absolute zero) emit electromagnetic radiation because of the thermal motion of their atoms. Thus they are emitting energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. The higher the temperature, the more energy they emit per second (i.e. power). Also the energy per photon increases with temperature. We are not too hot (about 300 – 310 K) so we emit infrared radiation. The sun is much hotter (the surface is around 5800K) and emits visible light along with some ultraviolet and infrared. The energy we receive from the sun comes from radiation.

Radiation emitted because of the thermal motion of the atoms in a material is called thermal radiation. It's also called blackbody radiation, because black objects are good emitters of this thermal radiation.

For visible light, the color of an object tells us how good it is at absorbing radiation. Objects that are white reflect light rather than absorb it, therefore they do no heat up rapidly when light shines on them. Black object absorb light and reflect very little. Therefore they heat up more quickly when light shines on them. We say white is a poor absorber and black is a good absorber. Objects that are good absorbers are also good emitters of thermal radiation. Black objects are perfect emitters (and absorbers) of thermal radiation. A black object that is emitting radiation but not receiving radiation will cool down more quickly than a white one, because the black object is better at emitting thermal radiation and therefore will emit more energy per second than the white one of the same geometry and temperature.

Best color? Whatever color the vehicle is you are sitting in that can get you where you want to go. Mines black and has a full tank of gas, I'm ready....

And I just learned something new about thermal radiation!:coffeedrink:

 Okay, that SERIOUSLY never occurred to me. Although, in my defense, what I'm really interested in is whether or not that translates to more difficulty on the trail or more strain on the vehicle. It didn't seem like it in my Ranger. The interior didn't seem anymore warm or the engine struggling in any way in the heat because the truck was black, just seemed like any other vehicle. But people always say to me "BLack, huh? must get really hot." So since I'm thinking of shelling out a lot of clams on a new toyota and color doesn't cost extra I'd figure out if it's important before I decide. It seems the Tacomas are the vehicle of choice for expedition type travel. I also thought of Jeep, but not much cargo space.

Y'all are barking, or at least barking up the wrong tree! The real answer is whatever looks best in a photograph and according to the 2008 Expo Calendar a white roof is the complete dogs bollocks.

All white vehicle: 7 vehicles
Non white vehicle with white roof: 6
No white: 3

Of the 16 vehicles in the calendar, 13 have a white roof.

My Jeep is white with a tan roof. Its chances of winning best in show are pretty slim. :D

Cheers,
Graham

I also like this color. Toyota Dune Beige 416 (old FJ40 color).

Yeah, that is quite ugly. May as well paint the hood white too. And don't forget to paint the undercarriage white too in case you roll it over on the trail, it'll keep you cool until someone rescues you :26_16_2:
