I have one in my rear view mirror, works great. Costs nothing to me.

In addition to my Silva compass and Map60, I carry the "Ranger" beads. I have tested the beads a bunch of times and found that per kilometer, they are fairly accurate (990 metres to 1015 metres) depending on my stride.Beads, my compass and gps are just tools though. If you can't read a topo and don't have good situational awareness, nothing will help you.I used to hike with someone who kept a string of beads and I'm thinking about doing this on my next long hike. Is anyone here using beads or other methods to keep track of distance?
