what do jeep guys like as a truck?

I have always believed there is more to the demise of the Rangers and S10 and small Colorados and Dakotas than the manufacturers have led us to believe. Why all of the small pickups were killed off in such a short amount of time is simply more than coincidence. And saying that there isn't a market for it anymore is complete bull****. Why did the price of rangers and s10s skyrocket then? Cause everyone likes a small truck with great mpgs, thats why. The f150 cannot fill that void no matter how hard they try.

If every auto maker can produce 3 models of suvs or crossovers that all look the same, then why cant we have a small truck? And a gosh darned Jeep one at that.

While I agree there needs to be small trucks, I would bet the downfall of the small truck is in relation to fuel economy. Especially for GM, the LS series engines get the same fuel economy as a small truck, but you get a big truck. I think they undersold the small truck market though, so hopefully we'll see some small trucks make a comeback (like the Duramax Colorado, or Jeep truck)

Skimming through the thread noticed not one mention of the Honda Ridgeline. I have always had trucks as DD. Ultimately mileage got the best of me. I drive a stupid amount for work. (70k a year). Car ride and mileage won out. Hoping the Ridgeline is all it is supposed to be. Decent mileage, decent interior, Honda reliability. I think it will do 90% of a normal 1/2 ton with out some of the draw backs. Could be a good highway DD choice and get me back into a truck as a DD. We will see.

What about the 4cyl Duramax Colorado?

Depends on what the truck is for. This is my truck. It is a work in progress. I wouldn't consider using it for "overlanding":

@ Mitch502

I like the Colorado's. For the price of them I can get a Ram 1500 or any 1/2t. I suspect the Honda will fall into that same category. Mileage figures have not been released for the Ridgeline. If they come in low, there goes that option.

I haven't looked lately, but initial estimates were 30+MPG highway on the Colorado with a price tag new of around $40K

24 mpg on the 3.6 option. 30 on the 2.8 diesel. Given the price difference on buy in, fuel and maintenance, it would be a long payback on the diesel. With luck the Honda Ridgeline will get similar, maybe better, to the Honda Pilot at 27mpg on a 3.5? If they can get to 30 that would be a real contender for me.

This is the first time I've heard these referred to as having minimal electronics.

CP3 a computer, 12volts and diesel is all she needs. My emissions stuff happened to fall off a long time ago.
manual transmission, manual transfer case, limited slip rear. none of that crawl control, part time, hill ascent, cylinder deactivation, fuel management stuff.

So it needs a computer to run :). All your gauges are ran by a computer. Your truck is far from "emp proof". You contradicted yourself. Your truck has a manual t case. Hence part time. But your truck doesn't have "part time". No diesel has cylinder deactivation.

Never said it was "computerless" I said "minimal electronics" compared to most newer vehicles on the road, it does have "minimal electronics", If i wanted to go "computerless", i would have gone for a 12v or early 7.3 or 6.9 DI. I dont want "part time" i want a limited slip rear and a manual transfer case with 2hi, 4hi, n, 4l. i dont care for "snow mode, sand mode, crawl mode." Yes it has "abs" but i do not have a computer controlling my tires and brakes. there is some researvh going on for diesel cylinder deactivation, but essentially its pointless with diesels being a compression driven engine.

I think we can chill a bit here fellas. Its just a truck. No need to fight, at least we arent shopping for a Prius. It aint EMP proof, it aint a newfangled car that can drive itself. No need to call each other out on what we do or do not understand. Put the keyboards down lol.

Good luck finding anything "computerless" these days, but if I had to choose a vehicle for a post "apocalypse " type vehicle, it would without a doubt be a 12v cummins. Whether it's in a dodge pickup, a ford f650, a bus, whatever.. it's a three wire engine that will run on almost anything oily, and will sip it. I'm a ford and a jeep guy, but I can definitely see the draw of a cummins... if only dodge would build a decent truck around it 😉
