What do you store OUTSIDE of your vehicle?

It's a very broad question, but to narrow it down, what would you carry on a small rack mounted to your trailer hitch?
And this would be not including your spare tire. (Kind of specific to my personal requirements.)

I'm thinking 1-2 jerry cans, and tow strap.
I won't be using a Hi-Lift, EVER if I can help it, so I don't need that.

I'm trying to brainstorm at the end of the day, and all I can come up with is tow strap and jerry can. lol
I'm planning on building a little rack that comes out of the receiver and goes vertical right away to maintain as much of my departure angle as possible. I'm also going to beef up the main portion that inserts into the receiver so I can still use it as a tow point and attach a large d-ring to it.

So, any ideas?

Jerry cans, action packer boxes with gear, and coolers. I would keep the recovery gear inside to protect it from the elements if at all possible.

The idea behind keeping the tow strap outside is to protect the interior from the muddy mess it becomes after I've used it. lol

I probably should have noted that this setup will mostly for doing trail rides and such, as I obviously don't need to keep my jerry can on the back when driving around town. :D

Tool box, shovel, axe, crowbar, jerry cans, hi-lift and spare tire are all staples in my bed. Obviously not a hitch basket or bumper but you can mount whatever you want on it. I'm a big fan of my 24" shovel as its great for those quick and easy problem spots and shoveling coals.

Since the picture, I've also mounted 2 20mm ammo cans that hold recovery gear.

On a little platform/deck my buddy keeps things like camping chairs, Wood for camp fire, tarps etc.

I actually have a huge storage box swing out thing that I load all of our camping gear in and more. There are pics somewhere up here of it.

Keep the strap in the vehicle. IF you have to use it, and get it dirty, outside is fine, UNTIL you can rinse it off good, and dry it out. THEN, back inside. For my smaller strap, I have a plastic case it stayed in, then, even if dirty, went back inside until I could wash it off....

The straps WILL degrade as they accumulate dirt and dust while at rest, THEN, once under load, can chafe.... Keep it dry and clean until you need it....that area on the back of a vehicle, gets VERY dirty, and fast.

Anyway....
Axe, shovel, etc outside. And anything else you can live with getting dirty and/or wet. That is YOUR call. Maybe a provision for trash....

on my van in the back bumper box I store all flamable fluids/gases..we sleep inside so I didnt want propane/butane/gasoline/coleman fuel and even my cooking stuff gets stored out back..that way if its not been cleaned yet (too tired) I dont have to smell it all night while I sleep..

on my last few woods 4x4 trucks my straps and my highlift/shovel always went outside..they were always muddy and easily accessable..

I use it for firewood mostly, occasionally misc recovery gear. Depending on how your exhaust exits, be careful about what you put there. On my Cherokee, the exhaust exited on each side of the tow hitch. On a cross country trip w/a hitch rack, I ended up melting holes in two action packers and melted down some stuff in the bins.

If you put food back there and your exhaust exits near there, it might smell :)
