What have you replaced the temp gauge in your Tdi with?

I'm finally getting around to replacing my temp gauge. The electrical sensor, I'm guessing, is correct for the 200 Tdi but the gauge is from a V8 so figured I'd replace the whole deal. Tried to put in a Sunpro mechanical but neither the sensor adapters included nor the metric ones they offer will fit. What have folks used that works?

Price, they're $270. But after speaking with Greg at RN it may be the voltage stabilizer. Gauges are supposedly the same for V8 and 200 Tdi.
As it is, needle most always reads at the edge of red, with headlights on, it's solidly in red though shooting the engine in various places w/ an infra red thermometer it never reads more than 170ish.

Sounds like you may have another issue going on as well. Obviously 1st you need to make sure your gauge and sender are matching so as to get the correct reading. If the gauge goes up with an electrical load such as the lights though you probably have a ground issue to sort out as well.

I had similar ground problems when installing a VDO set up in my 97 90. I ended up running a new dedicated (larger) wire to the sender direct from the gauge, a new dedicated (larger) frame ground to the gauge and adding another ground strap between the frame and the engine before I stopped having issues with the gauge climbing with other loads like lights and AC switched on. All of my other stock grounds checked out with a meter but the problem didn't go away until I ran new/extra/larger wires.

When I did the V8 to 300 Tdi conversion, I had to put my V8 temp sender in the Tdi block to get the gauge to read correctly. It always was almost in the red zone with the Tdi sender. I just drilled/tapped a brass plug (versus the stock plastic one) and screwed it into the top of the t-stat housing.

I much prefer mechanical over electrical if at all possible.
I'm pretty sure the Defender 200Tdi (Disco is different) sender thread size is 5/8-18 UNF. I should think you can find one, or an adaptor, so you can use a mechanical temp gauge.

Thanks for that I'll check the ground.

Thought about tapping, a plug with the right fine metric thread may be hard to source. Haven't looked yet though.

It is a Disco 200 Tdi. Short of getting the OE to work I'd like to go mechanical.

Gene,

The resistance is wrong, I thought we had that conversation back when you first got your truck in from MRM. If I remember correctly from the picture you sent when I imported your truck you have a disco 200 tdi not a defender 200 tdi. The senders are different. You need a defender 200tdi sender.

Yeah, we did have this conversation. Given the hybrid nature of this beast I thought I'd replace it all to make it "easy." Do you know if the Defender 200Tdi sender has the same threads as the Disco 200Tdi unit? They need to be M16 X 1.0
There is this from the thread linked above--a different animal from the standard Defender 200Tdi sensor??:

Thanks all for the input thus far

Hi Gene,

when I rebuilt mine I used VDO vision gauges & senders they look stock, very clear it all matches and its not too spendy.

Hey Gren,
VDO doesn't seem to have the M16x1.0 sender either. I found just the one at steveparkers.com over on your side, just emailed him(part#SPCK224T2 for anyone who ever needs it). It's made to go from Disco 200Tdi to Defender gauge. From the pictures I've seen of standard Defender 200tdi senders they have 4 threads the one I need has 6.
