What to watch out for on a 3rd gen 4runner?

Ok, please keep the flaming to a min. Can someone point in the direction of an existing thread or info on what to look for in a used 3rd generation 4runner? After looking over all the options a 97-00 4Runner is going to fit the bill. What should I be looking out for, I know the general timing belt, h20 pump but what other deferred maint issues are going to hurt me?
By the way looking for a 3.4, 4x4,AT and locker.
thanks Josh:coffeedrink:

99-00 have better interiors and the last chance for the locker option. 99-00 limiteds also have selectable AWD.

Depending on mileage (over 100k) it would be nice to know it the transmission has been flushed.
There really isn't much to look out for in these beyond your normal used vehicle inspection.
We are on our 2nd '99 and they are a very trusty vehicle.
Good luck!

Watch out for fallign love with your truck, you may get atached...

I loved mine, but situations changed and now I have a 2nd gen. crawler. Like it too, but still loved aspects of my 98.

After 160,000 miles, no major troubles, just take care of it and it will take good care of you and your family.

Great choice.

I have 180,000 on my 1998 - well my wife/daughters, but it was mine.

ONLY things we have done. (remember this is in salty NY)
Timing Belt, Trans fluid a couple of times, rear axle seals, a starter (really only the brushes, but it stopped working when it was very cold, and I didn't want play with it) and exhaust.

I love my Tacoma, but several things about the 4rnr make me miss it too!

If you're looking for an auto and locker chances are it may end up with a limited. These vehicles are getting older so the interior (leather) doesn't look as good. Like mentioned above check out the transmission. A plus would be if it has an aux cooler installed. Check to see if the locker works. Stop, shift transmisson in N and t case into 4lo. RR Diff Lock light in the dash should blink. Move forward and make a slight turn, when the locker engages the light stops blinking and goes solid.

Bad rear axle bearings leave a mess on the inside of the rear wheels and back of the backing plate for the brakes. Check for proper function of the sunroof and all other electrics. There are a lot of little cheap mods that can be done to a 3rd gen. If it has any of these done chances are the vehicle was taken offroad or pushed a little more than your average grocery getter.

I recommend buying an already built truck, there's some awesome deals out there right now (and some not so awesome deals!). Don't spend more to buy a truck built than what it would cost you to buy a stocker and mod it. I have a very refined Toyota vehicle test drive procedure, start it up, listen to it run, and then take it for a drive. If it's a good truck, it'll drive and run like a good truck and won't make any funny noises or smells. Good luck! Also, don't be afraid to wait a while and find what you really want.
Here's an idea of what you can get for the money, it's going to 35's in the next couple weeks and the price will go up commensurately.

I love my 98 Limited. 146k and going.
confirmed strawberry milkshake issue, replaced radiator,
rear axles seals= very easy and cheap,
timing belt and h20 pump= not a problem if done on time
rear clunk= easy fix,
cracking leather= it happens
sagging rear spring= replaced with OME
Power Radio antenna= not a big issue with me
Undersized brakes= upgrade to Brembo rotors and Hawk pads, looking at tundra upgrade
surface underside rust = welcome to ohio
not much more I can think of

The auto tranny is the weak link, as long as it's OK you're probably good. An auxiliary cooler is a good idea - pay $200 now or potentially $2000 later to fix the tranny.

Finding the 5 speed/rear locker combo is very difficult. 5 speeds also command premium prices because they're more rare. SR5/Auto/3.4/rear locker is a fairly common combo, so don't think you need to get a Limited in order to get the locker.

In 1999 Toyota started putting some interior upgrades: 3 12v power outlets in the dash, cup holders in the center console instead of sticking out of the dashboard, auto-off headlights (keeps you from accidentally running your battery down) and a few others. The 99 models also are the "highest" suspension from the factory - starting in 2000 they began cutting the suspension height because of the fear of rollovers.

"Sport" or "Highlander" models are SR5s with a few cosmetic additions, most notably the hood scoop. They tend to be highly desired by 4runner fans, though, so you'll have to decide whether the scoop is worth the extra cost. It wouldn't be for me.

Limited models have leather seats and sometimes (but not always) a sunroof. 99-00 Limiteds have the multi-mode transfer case that gives you full-time 4wd for the highway, and they quite commonly have lockers as well. The 99-00 Limited is the only 4runner that has the multi mode T-case + the rear locker except for the 09 Trail Edition that was introduced briefly at the end of the 4th gen 4Runner's run.

96-98 Limiteds and 96 - 2000 SR5s and base models have conventional 2wd/4wd with the J-Shifter.

All 01-02 4runners are 3.4 Automatics. No 4 cyl option, no 5 speed option, no locker option. They had traction control and multi-mode T-cases in all models.

You can get more information at the 3rd gen sub-board over at http://www.t4r.org.

For exhaustive info, go to T4R.org

Respectfully, I'd really only suggest T4R if you want to know how to paint wheels and tint windows.

If you want more technical info, check Yotatech.com

I bought my 97 with 49k and have 184k on it now. The posts in this thread pretty much covered the major issues, which really aren't too major. Rear axle seals, front brake rotors, steering rack bushings.

4runner

Thanks everyone.
RusM- too funny, I drooled over your 4runner for a longtime on the yota forum, but the dents(yes trival maybe, but if there are going to be dents I want to have put them there) and mileage kind of bummed me out.

So I looked at a 2000 4runner last night. AT/w locker, mostly stock with exception of fabtech springs/shocks, remote oil filter (leaking slightly at plate on block), American racing teflon wheels w/bfg muds (need replacing before doing anything but city driving over next 10k miles. Cloth interior :), and hood with scoop also a plus from my view. Body is good overall, nothing but a few scrapes on the bumper and a couple door dings

Rig has 142k, timing belt done at 70k so I'm guessing it needs to be done again.
Overflow tank liquid is not milkshake like, fair amount of oil under motor on belly pan (really a sheen) when looking down the passenger side. Diff Lock engaged as it should as well as 4H and 4L, slight shimmy/vibration at 45 feels like the tires although wear looked even, pulsing in front brakes in light to med application (likely needs new pads and rotors?) Looked undereath no sign of trail mishaps, and back of rear drums were dirty, but did not look as though the rear seals/bearings had gone. Owner (second one) has only owned the truck for 1.25 years, and doesn't know if anything was done with the rear axles or seals previous to his buying it from a Bay Area dealer.

Asking 8k, which seems high given it needs new tires, timing belt and possibly brakes. Thoughts?
thanks Josh
