One factor in my purchase decision is how well the tripod fits into a carry-on suitcase. The TSA is not happy when a tripod is hand-carried or strapped to the outside of the suitcase. The Dolica mentioned above folds up to less than 13 inches, presumably with the ball head removed.
Having to fiddle with four twist locks on each leg would get old, but the tripod is light enough to carry it around at its extended length. I worry a bit about the stability of the Dolica. The legs, with four telescoping segments, may not be stable enough in a breeze. I look forward to your report.
