What's next? after a Gen 3 Montero, or Montero Sport...

I agree with you on the FCA drivetrains. I'm actually responsible for the dynomometer (durability with engine) testing for their 8-speed transmissions made by ZF. The 8HP70 is probably our best transmission, but the other driveline components are very good as well. The weakest link may be the SRT 6.4L engines, but I think that is mostly because those engines are already at the edge of their limits.

I also would say my reason for keeping the Montero is because the 4WD capable SUVs/Trucks with similar reliability tend to be much larger. The Tahoe and Expedition are great vehicles, but the Montero's size fits down the Jeep trails much better. Sometimes I've wandered down paths meant for ATVs or possibly goats. I've even turned around in a space so small that a larger vehicle would need some trees cut down.

Thanks to all of you for contributing to this discussion. I realize some of this has been re-hashed over time, but if you don't search for exactly the right terms here, you'll miss the thread that might answer your question perfectly.

My short list of possible replacement vehicles, leaves me realizing I can spend a fair of repair/upgrade money on our existing Montero (and Sport), and still be well ahead of the game. In the maintenance department, I think the few extra quirks we have to tackle is a small price to pay in the big picture...we really do have fairly reliable vehicles, once you get to know them, and catch up the neglected stuff.

Now, to get my mind set towards optimism, to tackle my leaky valve stem seals on my Montero... I did the wife's Sport a year or so back, and it seems to have a new lease on life.

I'm curious if the ecoboost engines will see more use as swap engines in the future. They're tiny, powerful, and economical. Sure, they're a bit more complicated and high strung than an LS swap, but a little 2.7 with 325 HP and 375 ft*lbs sounds brilliant providing it's reliable enough. I just pulled that specific one out of the air, but since F-150's are the most produced vehicle in the world which mean parts will always be available and cheap.
