Where did the "what would you do?" post go?

It's not really even about big vs. small. That Espace is probably only 500lbs lighter than the Disco.
Yeah, that wasn't really the video I was looking for. There's another one with a Disco and something much smaller but newer. My point was that size isn't so much the issue in car vs car, as opposed to design differences.

Against an immovable barrier, OK. But otherwise, Suburban versus Smart car, I'd rather be in the Suburban . . . :)

You'd probably be dead in either case:

The smart car would probably slice through the burban like a knife.

I have to disagree with that. IMO, the Smart car is a bridge too far. I wouldn't drive one. I just bought a Kia Forte as a daily driver, but if I'd been able to find a mid-size that I liked and could afford, I would feel safer in that. I wouldn't mind a Smart car just in the city, but never on the highway. Just saw one on the 401 in Toronto yesterday... holeee crap. No thanks.

A lot of the trucks made even just recently are HORRIBLE too.

Full frame for the win!

Not.

This one is the best though. It's an accordion!

Is that Chinese truck an old VW Transporter made under license? Sure looks like one...

The passenger area is a crush zone for the cargo.

There are people that drive Smart cars from out here into the city every day. IMO the Smart car is just not meant for our roads outside of the cities. They get blown around in the winter, get stuck in slush ruts, etc., etc. Just not practical beyond being a city car.

Feeling safe doesn't mean you actually are safe.

Generally that's correct.

My feeling is usually backed up by a lot of research.

I was really surprised to hear that Chris Capowski has one, but I'm not sure where he lives exactly.

Actually I am fairly sure that the vw t-3 testing was done with an overloaded cargo area and was a test of a crash facility. :)

oh yea let me google that for you: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uykStESm3vw"]YouTube - What about that VW t3 crash test?[/ame]

On a what to drive note. I would go with something like an early forester. same ratings as a legacy, with awd, and better visability. Granted it doesn't get you a 3gen rangie. Which is nice.

Yeah.... I've heard so many mixed things. Mine was great. 80,000km on it, not in the shop once. And they have a reputation for going to 300,000km. But, I've also heard some horror stories. And one of my best friends bought a used Saabaru, low miles, stock. He put an upppie, downpipe and Cobb Accessport on it, did a few trackdays, and the motor let go. $10,000 for a new engine.
