Which axle upgrade route to take

[hijack]FWIW the BSFC (Best Specific Fuel Consumption) happens at peak torque in spark ignited engines. I believe that it is also true of diesels, but I'd have to check. BSFC is the point where the most power is produced for the least fuel consumed.[/hijack]

That is 1800 rpm on my Euro 6. It cruises at 65 mph now at about 3000 rpm. It really feels like it needs another gear - way more than the 4 cylinder in my 88" did.

Y'all are a wealth of ideas. They are all being incorporated into a spreadsheet for me and my wife to go over. I can't help it - I am an engineer.

From looking at the Rocky Mtn disc brake conversion it would appear to use stock, later model parts? If so, why is it $1100? Are those OE parts big dollars? An 11" rotor in a 16" wheel is giving away up to 2" of rotor diameter. That is huge in building brake torque.

The rotors, discs, pads & hoses are off the shelf 1990's GM parts. There is a custom machined adapter bracket (replaces the drum back plate) and a custom cast hub (both non consumables). The kit comes with everything except wheel bearings & your old ones are usually in good shape. The kit even comes with a special socket that might be hard to source in some locations and the correct locktite. there is also a very substantial custom shipping box.

Only 16 inch wheels will fit. Mel, who designed the kit told me the big problem was finding off the shelf components that would fit into the space, and be robust for the application. Coiler brakes fit the space but rotors & pads often need to be replaced by 40K miles.

I can say from experience that the brakes work better than the drum brakes. And the whole thing is half the price of Timm's conversion from Rovers North.

The Timm Cooper conversion that Rovers North sells for $2199

$2200 for just the front brakes? Are you kidding? For that kind of money I'll come and push the brake pedal for you.

Maybe I'm an idiot but I just don't get it.......

This is why the axles I already own, sitting under our partially disassembled RRC are so appealing.

The question I need to answer soon is to use them or to sell them.

Except that will only get you disc brakes and not address your breakage problem at all.

He would get a bit of extra track width.

As for the preventing breakage part.....

I'd just sound like a broken record.

For those of you not old enough to understand... That's the sound of broken Vinyl.. A Hard plastic similar to what they make CD's out of but the sound is printed on the outside not the inside... LOL...

To be honest, I don't either. If there was something unique about these axles in terms of strength or some other characteristic that made them highly desirable, I could almost understand it. Some people will do anything to keep a vehicle "original" (to the brand), even if the end result ends up costing way too much. Actually, sounds kinda like a Series Rover...

For me, I'm going to run the stock 88 drums until I find them wanting, then look at other options. Finding a rear axle that has a similar width and decent support is the real trick. Fronts with the right characteristics are pretty easy to find.

The idea of the Toyota drivetrain is nice, but at some point you have to just say, get a Toyota. Although their frames look awful wimpy.

Also, there are more modifications I am willing to make to a standard 109, but this is an original Dormobile. There were fewer of those made than the "Special Editions" of a lot of modern cars.

I am out of town right now, and since my laptop is broken and the new one is not here yet, I am spreadsheetless right now.

TeriAnn, what master cylinder do you have? John upgraded to a SIII dual circuit MC along the way.
