Which Diehard Platinum for '08 Range and an '06 LR3

Since I have seen the Diehard platinums recommended as excellent batteries, I was trying to locate replacements for my current batteries. *edit - running single battery only at the moment*

2008 L322

2006 LR3

Sears does not list a direct replacement for either in the platinum battery. Is there a size that they do carry that will fit in the two vehicles or do I need to just buy Odysseys?

Thanks,

Paul

Not sure where the DieHard recommendation came from, but most forums and my personal experience has shown that the Interstate Mega-Tron Plus Part # MTP-49/H8 is THE battery to have in the LR3. Not sure about the RR.

*Edited. Having issues now with the interstate after only 2 years. Maybe not the right choice.

I'll second the Interstate. I tried an Oddesy, PC1220, as my main battery. I did not like it. It lasted about 18 months before it would always sit around 50%. I suspect that the charging system could not properly charge it. I do run an Oddesy as my second battery though, group 34M. I had the Die Hard equivalent at one time and it failed in 9 months. While everyone says that they are the same as the Oddesy I am not so sure. My Oddesy has been going strong for three years now.

These are new to my vehicle, but come recommended by other LR4 owners.

Top AUX (traxide kit), Bottom Starter batt.

I've read a number of threads in different forums and not yet heard of that one let alone it being "THE" battery for the lr3.... do you have any links to support this idea? The most I've heard raved about are Deka and Odyssey.

The Platinum series Diehard are made by Odyssey apparently. I have seen many people with positive reviews on that specific line.

Odyssey do require charging in a certain way. I was told, upon testing, by the regional battery supplier that my lr3 was putting out what it needed for proper charging.

We shall see.... I've had the 2150 in the 2nd slot for 7 years and it's near 100% still but the starter slot was only changed out this summer to hold a 1350 which has a bit more Ah and reserve of the Interstate listed above.

So, do you think there is a reason why the one in your 2nd slot is fine but the primary didn't stay 100% ? I think I'm going to have a tech look into my charging system and see if the dual battery set up somehow is "better" for the aux that is different from how the primary is charged.

I will say though that I had a 1st 1350 in my primary spot maybe a year ago, and something wasn't working out and it seemed to get weak. They were very cool about it at the distributor and tested it in the truck, then took it in for a week to do long term load testing over a day or two. They said a lot of companies would have told me it's "fine" because it was actually still within "spec" by most standards but theirs were higher so they replaced it. The new one after 4-5 months now is fine but I do plan to get set up for actually monitoring them better.

I chose the 1350 and 2150 because they were the most run time and CCA I could get into those slots. They do require a higher grade charger though if not in the vehicle.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I had been researching to replace the batteries in both mainly because I have had the LR3 for four years and had never replaced the battery and was willing to bet it was not new immediately before purchase etc. So I was looking to do both vehicles.

Yesterday morning the radio in the wife's range starting cycling on and off about every 30 seconds to a minute. So I wanted to see what I would need in case that was the issue. I checked for moisture in the left rear area by the modules (nav, bluetooth, etc.) did not see any signs, so I pulled the battery. I cold not see a date on it. It had 2 8 07 etched in the negative post but 0213 at the end of the serial number. It was a land rover battery, could have been factory original June 07 build date, or new since we bought the vehicle December of '13. Either way it tested at 500 CCA (listed at 800) at one location and 415 CCA at the second. The first location did not have the interstate battery in stock and not odyssey dealers or sear nearby. I ended up getting a platinum battery at Advance Auto parts, 900 CCA over the gold which had 950 CCA due to the three year warranty.

Good news is, it appears to have been the source of the headache. I am driving it today to see how it does. 20 minute commute issue free.

Unrelated I think: I noticed that the RPM's fluctaute between 500 and 900 while it was warming up. It don't drive it much so I can't tell if this just started or has been going on for a bit. It is my wife's car and she just gets in and goes. She does report anything obvious but does not really listen for performance changes etc. Any thoughts?

I agree. I plan to go to Deka once my Interstate (primary) and Optima (secondary) fail. I've decided to go Deka over the Odyssey primarily because of the higher grade charger needed for the Odyssey's...they also need dedicated chargers for each battery. Deka's aren't quite as particular about their charger type and can be charged together with a single charger via the dual battery controller in the vehicle.

The interstate is brought up a LOT. Specifically the MTP-93/H7 and the MTP-49/H8. I believe the stock size of the LR3 battery is H7, but you can upgrade to the slightly larger H8 without fitment issues.

The MTP-49/H8 shows lower CCA than the OEM battery (730 vs 800) that I pulled out the range. I assumed you would want to upgrade capacity, is that an intentional switch or just a result of wanted the reliable battery and it is just sized at that capacity?

Edit - Mega-tron II version is 900 CCA

This is the battery I ended up with. I am sure it is fine but time will tell. It is just daily driving about 15 miles each way. Honestly any battery will probably do the trick for this.

I've talked to several Sears stores recently. Seems the Diehard Platinum Series was discontinued. You'll have to shell out the extra bucks on the Odyssey.

Funny, I usually only rely on information from EP because too many people on the rover specific forums are either cheap, too swayed by marketing, or just don't have any long term experience worth listening to. EP seems to have a much wider range of people from around the world who are exposed to brands not just down at the local store here.

Was there a battery "review" on EP yet? There should be like the ones for tires, fridges, recovery gear, cases, etc.

I think must of the recommendations for the Interstates comes from the fact that this is the battery that nearly all LR Dealers use. Shortly after I purchased my used LR3 the original battery went south. My LR3 was still under the factory warranty so LR replaced mine with an Interstate MTP-93/H8. This was back in 2011. Same battery is still in the car, but I've noticed that the battery is beginning to not hold its charge very well as over several days of not driving it will reduce itself from 12.7 down to 12.1 or a lttle less......where as my Optima 34 Yellow top in the secondary spot maintains it charge at 12.5-.6 over the same period. I plan to move to a Deka as soon as this one poops out completely.

I have dumped the Interstates and gone exclusively with Deka. I've been averaging a year and a half to two on the Interstates. I am very pleased with the Deka so far. I also pulled the Yellow Tops and am using them for other projects. My experience is based since 2005 and going through at least 5 interstates, having been forced to pay for 2 of them and trading in the last 1 toward the Deka because they wouldn't honor the warranty (again).

I have been carefully monitoring battery voltages for some time, and believe me when I say, the Deka is performing great compared to the Interstate.

Interesting. Which DEKA battery did you go with, seems like there is some debate between the 9AGM49 and the 649MF?
