Which mount "Sucks" the most???

I need to get a suction mount and wanted to know who provides the greatest "suck" factor, the Ram Mount or the Lobster Mount:) Or, is there another brand out there that is even "suckier"? Of course I am using the word "suck" in only the best way:sombrero:

Andrew, I have a Lobster mount (for PDA) that I would be happy to send to you if you want to try it out and send it back when you are finished with it. Like this...

It has a tensioning ring on it that I can't get to work quite right. I think the suction works well, but the arm connection wiggles due to this tensioning ring, so I have it braced on the edge of the dashboard.

I've got a RAM windshield mount for my Garmin StreetPilot III and it's held quite securely. Even during offroad rescues it hasn't fallen off yet.

BajaTaco, thank you for your kind offer but I already know that I will need the larger (Lobster) model and not the smaller (Shrimp) model. I am running a Garmin 76 along with a tab to mount my CB mic. The reason I am asking is because I really need it to be fairly secure and don't want the whole contraption vibrating around. I think that I know the answer, but is the Lobster suction portion larger than the Shrimp suction?

offroad_nomad- does the Ram Mount do a good job of eliminating vibration? Do you have the bottom of the Garmin resting on the dashboard?

Yes and No.

Yes, it does a nice job eliminating vibration and I have no problem viewing the display while offroad.

No, the Garmin is about an inch above the dash.

Anyone have experience with this Ram Mount model? For my money this is the "suckiest" one yet, two 3.25" suction mounts!!!:wings:

I've never used the double suction cup mount. I have a single suction cup for my Magellan Meridian that is identical to the one Offroad Nomad uses and it works fine. How heavy is your GPS unit? I would think a single mount would be adequate for all but the heaviest of devices.

I actually run a Garmin 76, which is a smaller unit. The problem arises because I also hang my Cobra 75WXST on the same mount. I need the stability when it comes to removing and replacing the Cobra when talking. I know, probably not the best set-up, but I don't have a lot of options with the limited amount of dashboard on the Defender. Hence why I am going to try out the double suck mount:)

Sorry, I don't know. I think your idea of using the big double-suction RAM sounds good though.

hey Andrew!

I should have had you take a look at my Ram Mount while we were on the trail together. I have a Garmin 276C which may be as heavy or heavier than your 76 and CB. I am using a Ram single-cup mount and right now it has the GPS about 1" above the dash without problems. Earlier I ran the unit almost on the dash with a little rubber piece underneath to prevent full contact.

here is a fuzzy foto:

the Ram Mount cup does not seem to come loose with hot or cold temps either

Thanks for the info Jim, I would have like to have checked it out at Big Bear.

Well, I did order the double suction mount and installed it. My first impression was the it was OK, but not as solid as I anticipated. There was defintely vibration with just street driving and I can only anticipate that it would have been worse off road. After driving around and watching, it appeared that most of the movement was coming from the plastic plate that attaches or bridges the two suction cups. In addition, because of the width of the platic piece it places all of the components about 1/2" further out, which introduces more leverage.

I unbolted one of the suction cups and mounted my GPS and CB and low and behold it is more solid than the double!!! I am very happy with just the single ram mount and am amazed at the suction power of just the single unit. I have had very good luck with all Ram Mount products in the past, but the bridging plate was a dissapointment. I think the idea was correct, but the part being made of plastic was it's downfall. Hope this helps some others out in the future.
