The plan is to pass on the RRC to my son when he strats to drive. Id like to replace it with an LR3. Primary use will be the same as the RRC, long distance off road and camping.

Which year(s) to look for or stay away from and why.

Thanks in advance, Dino

You will find some saying they have had fine luck with the 05 and 06's but they seem to have had many more issues reported with diff failures, electrical gremlins ,etc. the general consensus is get the newest one with all service history available that you can afford. Many feel that 07 and newer tend to be best but that's an opinion. My friends at the dealer have reported very few issues with 08 and newer lr3'sand I can tell you personally my 08 lr3 with 36k and my wife's 08 sport with 41k have had no issues other than an o2 sensor and battery on mine which were replaced under factory warranty.

I agree with above. 08+ if you can. I'd be ok with an 07, but may think very hard about 05-06.

Only issue with my 08 was the famous broken rear hatch latch cable (which unfortunately happens to them all around 40-50k). $77 and an hour of my time was all it needed.

I too am curious as to what allegedly makes the later ones more reliable. There are very few actual hardware changes, and it's hard to find any supporting documentation on ones that may (or may not) have been made.

I have heard about the front diff failures. I have read that it was supposedly traced back to a faulty coating on the insides and was phased out by late '05 models (with many of those already replaced by new parts under warranty). I wonder how much of that is true and how much is 'internet true'.

The suspension and roll bar bushings are well known as wear parts to watch - but that effects all years equally.

Other than that, it seems like there was a ton of software updates between the years. Those can be done by the owner with the proper tool.

The '09s look a bit better as they had a new bumper and LR4-ish color coding for some of the LR3s black parts.

IIRC, '05 and '06 lacked lumbar adjustment in the front seats, but was added for '07-'09.

My (bought used) '06 HSE has only needed an alternator and the plastic coolant breather. I've owned it from 63K miles - 94K miles and going.

My '05 has been relatively trouble free: purchased with 90 miles on it and now has 146,XXX. Normal wear items and an e-brake lock up and bonnet sensor.

That's it and I couldn't be more happy with the truck.

Real examples of people having good luck with 05/06's are much better than internet hearsay IMO. I was just saying above, that a few friends of mine at the local dealer have talked about seeing a lot improvement in the latter years of the LR3 and RR Sport in particular, as opposed to other models where it hadn't been as noticeable. But that's still a small sample in the scheme of things. I think with any vehicle/model, they to work kinks out after the first year or two of a new model - not much more to it than that.

So far my 2007 HSE is doing pretty well with just over 94,000 miles on it. Probably need to take a close look at the front suspension and that's about it.
Just returned from a long road trip where I got 20.6 mpg on several tanks of mid-grade gas. Last tank on the trip gave me 21 mpg (315 miles/15.0 gallons).
These figures were running 72-73 mph with cruise control on (around 2100 rpm) . Best I ever got with my RRC was 18.5 mpg and it sure didn't have 300 HP.

I have an 06 and am well pleased with it. It has had a mass airflow sensor replaced, the lower front control arm bushings, and anti roll bar bushings done. Sitting at 60K miles, it is as tight as a tick.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't implying that the '07+ plus wasn't at least a bit better, they likely are. I was just saying that it's hard to nail down what exactly might make them better.
