Who would be interested in a 2012 "End of the World" Maya Rally?

Do you know if this will be a family friendly event? Anyone planning on bringing their kids?

yes, I don't think that would be an issue. there might be a couple of "late night celebrations" along the way but other than that, I don't see a reason why not.

A couple of friends and I have been toying with the idea of putting together a one-time event to coincide with the apocalyptic vision of the Mayan people.

:sombrero:

We would be putting together an expedition/rally/treasure hunt from the USA to Tikal (or nearby) in December 2012 - so we can be at a premier Mayan site on the Dec 21st 2012 "end of the world" date.

The overall plan is to drive from the USA with your own vehicle, collect some items along the way that are essential to survive, and accumulate points in the process. Whomever finishes with the highest number of points would win a significant prize.

The rally would end nearby a Mayan site with some sort of celebration. It would not be about speed and would be open to all kinds of vehicles. Spaces would be limited.

This is still just a crazy idea and we have not put much research into it, but I'm curious to see what you guys think.

Would you participate? Would you like to help organizing it?

Heck yeah...why do you think I am about to put in a 6.2L diesel...so I can run veggie oil since when the end of the world comes there won't be any oil companies left :)
And Mexico has plenty of veggie oil for cooking up all that good food!
New Year = more french frys???:victory:

I like the general concept...
But here are my "devils advocate" thoughts:
Keep the fee as low as possible and make it clear that any extra goes to a charity..then make sure you tell everyone how much that it and who it went to.

Make sure you have trophies for the top 2-3 in each class...a small plaque (local made helps the local economy) or something is way better than any sponsor pack of stuff we could buy at home. Also don't just have a 1st place overall and that is it, have a few classes and some odd ball extras (team spirit, party animals and such)

Make sure it is not a mad-dash, don't see anything but get your checklist completed, only stay at these locations type event.... I know, I know, every organizer says they won't but it is easy to end up that way.

Think about the return trip also, being in Maya land for Dec 21st is cool, but many people will have to be home for Christmas so make sure the event allows people to hit the road Dec 22nd at a reasonable time, matter of fact a great event planner would have info on where/how people could ship a rig home and fly to get there quicker.

Be very careful you don't take a great SIMPLE idea and "just one more thing" it to death. The vehicle donation, emergency vehicles and all that sounds great on paper....but what was wrong with a fun trip with a bit of a game thrown in? Does is have to be Mongol Rally?

I hope I haven't rained on any parade...that isn't my desire. I just wanted to offer some early stage thoughts to help it be a great event.
If I go it will because my health finally allows it and it's the END OF THE WORLD. I do not expect a trophy for that.......who would I show it too!!!!:wings:
All I expect is help if I get stuck parts if I need them and someone has em. Great company! If I was young I might hope for a few more things.....but I'm not. Would be a great place to be at Xmas time. Yessiree Bob (Dog):coffeedrink:

Those are a couple details that crossed my mind too. Missing Christmas for me and/or my wife would be a big deal with my family. Being able to drive or fly home for Christmas might be a requirement.
Geeeez! Its the end of the world.....what are you going to fly home to? come on, get in the spirit (no pun) of things!

This would be awesome, celebrating the end of the world, at a Mayan site...chilling out on a temple (if you can even do that??)

I'm down...now just to hurry up and finish up the Jeep, if that doesn't pan out I may have to take the Jetta, but hey I'll take that thing off road for a chance of a life time.

Call me a skeptic about the end of the world this year... ;)

I love the idea for the trip and party though :)

Has this question been asked? Won't many of the Mayan sites be the sight of a mass migration???

Even though it would be hectic, I'm down, I think it would be a once in a lifetime experience!

So everyone here is a question:

would you prefer:

a) ending around Palenque in Mexico/Yucatan Peninsula (or perhaps Cancun). Route would shorter and only one country to cross in. More people to party with.

b) ending in Guatemala around Tikal, going through Belize. Route would be longer and a bit more challenging (more border crossing).

thank you!
