Who would be interested in a 2012 "End of the World" Maya Rally?

I wold be happy to drive anybodies truck back from CA or Mexico. As long as you pay for my expenses and provide me with a small fee for my time.

If my canoe trip up north doesn't end up working out, I'd be interested...

A few questions (I'm a newb at Mexico vehicle travel, so excuse me if these are too simple...)

Would this be a 'group trip' or more of an individual go-your-own-way type of competition?

Would travel down there in an H3 w/military trailer be a good idea? (yeah, I know, but that's what I drive, so might be a dealbreaker)

Would the organizers handle the paperwork/insurance/etc needed for a trip like this? If not, would there be an 'info packet' for us to help navigate all the necessary stuff...

Roughly how long do you think it would take to complete?

Assuming eating at mostly local places and sleeping in a RTT, what would be a reasonable daily budget for food/non-vehicle expenses?

I'm definitely interested, would be a great way to finish off 2012 (and beyond?)!

My wife and I have been thinking of driving to Tulum, Mexico and then on to Belize, and possibly Costa Rica, about this time frame. We may just tie this in with our trip, we are flexible on dates, planning on taking 2+ weeks off around this time.

We are having our second child in less than two months and my wife is using some of her vacation time to stay home longer. We are planning a trip south of the border November 17-25 and will only use 3 days of vacation time for that. If anyone is planning to take longer to start the End of the World, you are more than welcome to join us in Northeastern Mexico. Route will consist of a gauntlet run to the mountains southeast of Monterrey then several days in the mountains with a trip down to Real de Catorce before returning north. 4wd required, snorkel recommended.

Forgive me if I am speaking out of place here...

But, I would think its generally safe to say that you will be responsible for doing the border crossing part yourself. Its a piece of cake really. You might want to hook up with someone who has done it before or at least share the experience with another newb.

A Mexican colleague of mine has an H3T in Mexico City, and I've seen Escalades with spinners headed for Pueblo. As long as your military trailer isn't a military color (matte tan or camo) I wouldn't worry about it...

Street tacos with a coke will cost you $2 or less. I generally budget about $15/day for food in Mexico. Street tacos for breakfast/lunch and a decent dinner in the evening.

That's my 2 cents.

i think it could be both. if people wants to gather and drive together into Mexico, that's totally fine. if they prefer to go on their own, that would be okay too.

the information is widely available on the net. we can help with some references but participants would be on their own at the actual crossing.

Roughly how long do you think it would take to complete?

very roughly 2 weeks, but we don't want to make it a race. if peoeple wants to take more or less, that would be their choice.

Assuming eating at mostly local places and sleeping in a RTT, what would be a reasonable daily budget for food/non-vehicle expenses?

$20/day should be sufficient, but don't forget that tolls can be expensive if you drive on the freeway in Mexico.

I'm definitely interested, would be a great way to finish off 2012 (and beyond?)!

Looks like we are getting some momentum on this.

2 notes:

How many of you have a problem with this date being so close to Christmas? Unfortunately I don't have much control on this as it was decided by the Mayas 1000 years ago but we could make it so people having to leave earlier would still be eligible to win.

If we do that, I REALLY need to have some help on the IT side (well, I would need an entire team as I don't personally have much time to invest).
But right now I would need someone to design and maintain a website.
Any volunteer?

From the Daily Mail:

"While many people may regard today as simply another day on the advent calendar before Christmas arrives, in Mexico it marks the beginning of a year-long party.
According to some interpretations of the ancient Maya calendar, December 21, 2012 signifies the end of the world and people in the southeastern part of Mexico - the heart of Maya territory - are planning to party hard just in case they're right. And hopefully turn a profit at the same time.
Mexico's tourism agency expects to draw 52 million visitors over the coming year just to the five states richest in Maya heritage. Mexico as a whole is expected to lure just 22 million foreigners this year."
