Why do folks say, "Jeeps aren't expedition vehicles?"

I'll just say this again... I will follow any so called "Expedition Vehicle" anywhere , for any period of time.. But the question I pose is, can they or better yet ... will they follow me. I have had some fun and enjoyed watching FJ's, and Land Cruiser's on the trail.. but to be honest the trails were challenging for them and not so much for me. I believe in that everyone has their idea of the perfect weapon. I personally have found mine. I can outfit my rig to do what the Journey calls for in about 1 hour.. I can tame it down and go SUV'n through the fire roads with RTT in place on my trailer, or I can shed some skin and go deep into the canyons where no SUV dare to go. I do appreciate what the Expedition world has to offer and overlanding is great however driving and camping out just won't suffice sometimes. Adrenaline is neccessary in my life and has always been.

So here's to you , whoever said that Jeeps aren't Expedition Vehicles.. I'll see you camped on the side of the road, smile as I drive past ya, climb into a canyon and make camp for the night pitched on the side of the mountain far away from society. Enjoy your mild existence, we need you out there maintaining the gap between the rat race and the rats in the caves.

Thanks for listening to me , and yes it did get under my skin. Hearing that "Jeeps aren't Expedition Vehicles." BUT !! They're right , they are "EXTREME EXPEDITION VEHICLES."

thanks for the post. Nice to have the perspective of a rock-crawler who appreciates the overlanding side. I personally think Jeeps are wonderful rigs, that can basically do anything well...

Jeepers are specific breed. Our kung **** is strong! :)

wow tool, you're right -- no vehicle could ever follow you there. Me thinks you missed the point.

I like Jeeps to some degree and almost bought one, but for some, a week long or longer trip in a wrangler with out a trailer would not be an ideal situation. As a family man, I know I can pack up my family, and a weeks worth of food, water, and fuel along with our camp gear and not have to worry, plus I do not have to carry a trailer, unhitch when I wanna go down a trail, hope that i am coming back, etc. Jeeps do have there place, awesome 4x4 and weekend get away, but for a family and a week out driving 5-6 hours a day with no gas stations or stores, probably not gonna happen without a trailer. which limits where your going to go.

I wouldn't want to try and take more than 2 people in a SWB jeep for any extended length of time.....no thank you....

On the other hand. We can pack for a week long trip in a TJ and not have the gear above the bed rails in the back. I just try and think about 'jeep expeditions' as motorized backpacking......or maybe the amount of gear I would take on a pack animal for hunting.

I wouldn't call running the hammers an expedition.
If I want I have the best of both worlds. Just tow my Jeep. More than fours in my Jeep is just pure torture.

Being that I raised a lot of eye brows and am getting alot of brow beatings. and rather than trying to quote everyone here it is...

I don't have kids.. nor do I want them. ( I do love them ) nice for the future of mankind. Sure you're gonna say I shouldn't reproduce anyway.. If that is you then I guess your right because I wouldn't want my kid gettting suspended for kicking the **** out of your kid for being a dumb ***.

I don't have a back seat in my TJ for a REASON. IN fact the day I brought it home it was the first thing to see the fire.

I wouldn't take more than two people in any vehicle on any trip.. If you can't get there on your own you don't belong there. Most of all, I'm going out there to get away from the "NOrms" of the world, not dragging their baggage and hair dryers with me.

Hammers isn't an "Expedition Run" I'm using that as an excellent place that rock crawlers go and "EV's" can't.

If you're calling me a tool. Thanks I resemble that comment. I may be a tool.. but I'm no fool. If you're broken down on the side of the trail you'll want me to be driving past you waving...I'll get you back on the road and on your way home with your worried wife and screaming kids. Your swiss army knife and custom galley only goes so far, and you know who you are. The world needs "Tools" like me, I carry more tools in my Jeep than most overlanders have in their garage.

Love ya all thanks for the attention I really needed it.
AND AGAIN

I will go wherever, whenever for as long as needed in any weather, with or without my trailer.. If you feel it's neccessary to bring a kitchen sink and a microwave on an extended camping trip (let's face it that's all overlanding is) ...... stay home and enjoy your luxurious life styles or check into a hotel. Roughing it and the survival of it is what keeps me going out there.

The topic is " Why do people say that Jeeps are not Expedition Vehicles ?"
Well they are.. In fact I know a few folks who sold their Land Cruisers for LJ's

BTW my forehead is bleeding from banging it against the wall. I'm actually sorry I indulged in this conversation. I usually stay clear of the useless banter, but sometimes I can't help from trying to help.
.
I really believe we're all wishing we were away from our computers and out in the wilderness.:camping:

I could not agree more. Our next trip is to Moab in May. 5 days using Arches as base camp; an overnighter in the Needles; 4 days on the White Rim Trail; & finally 4 days in the Maze. Our first trip in our TJ was to the Gaspe' penninsula in Quebec,, (nearly 4 million acres to ourselves). Pulling our custom built trailer, with our gear, causes the TJ to handle like a much longer wheel based vehicle.
For anyone to think that the TJ, is not an "excursion" vehicle, they are mistaken. We are completely comfortable with long range journeys, and have complete confidence in the reliability of our equipment. All of our modifications suit our needs, and we are able to carry enough food, water, gasoline, etc, to last nearly 10 days in the back-country. Our next long range voyage is in the primary planning stages, and I am sure more mods are on the way, to continue to make our exploration of North America a pleasurable experience for us.
In North America, it is simply a matter of parts availability, and marketing. (Range Rover; Nissan; Land Cruiser; or Jeep) in the 80's I knew a fellow in Colorado that had 3 Rovers to keep one running, he waited nearly 9 months for a flywheel. I'm sure the parts distribution network is far better than that now, but it was a deciding factor when we bought our Rubi. If we lived in Africa, or Australia, my choice in vehicle would have been much different. ie diesels and stick shifts, (try to find a late model LC with a stick) which are not available here in the states.
So, I guess it all depends on where you live, where you are going, and how much cash you have. For us, the TJ Rubi, is the best excursion vehicle, for our needs.

it all depends............
you can do a year-long expedition on a bicycle.
you should be able to fit the same amount of gear in/on any kind of motorized vehicle - even a flatfender - (i didn't say it was comfy :))

i did two 6-months trips, a 2-months trip and several 2-4-week trips in an XJ.
some people think that wouldn't work either.
everything works if you want to, but of course there might be better ways, more comfortable ways (some have a king-size bed, shower and big-screen tv), etc., etc.

hey, you can even do an expedition on foot..........
my 2 cents

My feet are expeditions vehicles. They carry me around place to place, I can take them out on long multi-day or even multi-week trips. They can support the weight of all I need to survive.

If it takes you to your destination and back in one piece it's an expedition vehicle.
