Why do folks say, "Jeeps aren't expedition vehicles?"

My jeep blew its water pump, a head gasket, shocks, and radio all went out before 80K..... and this was a grandma's truck for the 60K before I got it....Was a 2000 model. Its traded hands twice since i had it, but its still in town.

Cool trucks, but not my choice for a expedition vehicle.... not stout enough in my opinion.
But what do I know?

Had the same experience with a 98 ZJ at 60,000 miles and it had been very well cared for. Also had lots of issues with my 87 YJ with the 258. Now I'm running a 96 XJ and I love it. Its strong and capable, and I dont hesitate to take it cross country. Reliability is hit and miss with Jeeps.

Oh, and the auto tranny would stick..... sometimes it wouldnt shift from 2nd-3rd.....

I had a buddy that had a 2000 wrangler also, same mileage with NO known issues... except a front end collision....

Another buddy with a 97 wrangler.... problems with water pump... clutch went out very quickly, header cracked and leaked, transfer case wouldnt shift to 4Low.

Another buddy with the 4cyl Wrangler, 2003, no problems whatsoever, and he ragged the hell out of it.

Jeeps are very hit and miss. I think they are cheap... but still a cool vehicle. I like the older ones better though. The new Wranglers are bad ***, I would own one in a heart beat.

Yup the new Wranglers are bad***.

The toughest hardest machines I have ever owned....our 2007 has 41,000 expedition, travel, and offroad kms on it. Rarely driven for personal business or errends.....like I said in a previous post, we have a Hyundai Elantra for that stuff ;) haha.:wings:

In all those kms, we've only had one issue, the EVAP Cannister. Its location is shiite. I cracked an outgoing tube on it....so, I fixed it, then got a skid plate for it.....done.

Other than that, a rock solid INCREDIBLY capable vehicle.

Jake is right, look at our Libertys we had.....MORE THAN capable of a global event.

The vehicle is just a platform, how you drive and how you use it make all the difference....yes, there are lemons out there, but every brand has that.

So....? The question still stands, can WE get a Camel Trophy inspired event put on with Jeep models??

Keep the rubberside down...... :26_7_2:

Sponsored by or affiliated with Jeep? Doubtful. They already have the Jamborees and Camp Jeep to sell the brand, and those events (localized, trail oriented) speak more towards their intended audience.

Expedition events are harder to put on, as the logistics has to be completely mobile. Land Rover pretty much has the market cornered on brand-specific events like that in the States. Don't think that Jeep hasn't considered it, but it's kinda obvious what style of event they prefer.

What?! Jeep is not an Expedition vehicle? Sheesh....320,000 miles later... now you tell me...

Okay, how do I break the news to my Jeep?

(I kid, I found this in the desert :smilies27)

Jeeps can be great rigs, build them right and they can be extremely reliable. I'm for one thankful we have multiple platforms to choose from. Just to day I was looking at a customers rig that is getting Jeep Rubicon axles underneath his turbo-diesel Mitsubishi mini-truck

Yes it was....and the last one was with Honda Elements...or something like that.

The forst one was withe CJ line-up....

Jeep has separated themselves from any and all events here in Canada....Jamborees included....

What do you think they are trying to say with that???

Jeep holds a grand total of.....ZERO....events in Canada....and Canada is one one of its BIGGEST customer bases.....hmm.

I remember in my travels in Russia and North Africa and couldn't agree more. There was even this great Land Rover we found in Egypt that had been drive up from South Africa in route back to England and my Eriterian friend called it a "Jeep", samething with my Russian friends, anything with 4wd was called a "Jeep".

Jeep corporate really only held Camp Jeep for civilians. The jamborees are put on by Mark Smith's organization, with heavy blessings from Jeep. When I did the Rubicon Jamboree years ago, Jeep led their own group of journalists, and meeting up with the Jamboree at the springs. They had their own private campsite and catering, although they did rely on the jamboree folks for some logistical support. I tagged along with the journalists on the way in, and got to see how the other half lives. Our lunch was flown in just above the Little Sluice (good stuff), while the jamboree folks had box lunches. Just a little different.

I think they pulled out of various venues based on a lot of factors, like logistics, participation, and overall cost. They've added other venues in the states, but I wouldn't be suprised if they tightened up the operation a bit more in the future as gas prices affect how people want to recreate. I drove 2 days one-way in my CJ-5 to do the Rubicon, and I'm not sure I would have done it if gas was this expensive then.

After seeing the jamboree experience, I can honestly say it's not for me. I generally don't like crowds, and somewhat rigid schedules just don't seem right to me. It's required for the size of the group, but that's not me.

Check with the Canadian clubs for competitive events. Somebody has to organize one over there.

This is funny, Jeep as a word has become like Kleenex!

My parents and others I know, who know that I have a Land Rover, are always asking "so, how's the Jeep" "Taken the Jeep anywhere lately"....

No big deal since we all understand the context of the conversation.

And I agree, It's how you use it more that what it is. Just look at the diversity of the rigs represented here on ExPo!

I think it basically started out that way. Didn't the word "Jeep" come from the military designation GPV , General Purpose Vehicle? GP for short.

Describing any offroad vehicle as "GP" makes sense and may be why they are all referred to as "GeePs"?

Makes sense to me ;)

'GP' really stood for... G= 'Government' P= '80 inch wheelbase'.

Its fortunate that short wheelbase wasn't designated by 'K'!

Yeah there are Canadian events.....but they are totally similar to the Jamborees.....and they were created when Jeep pulled out of Canadian Jamborees.

BUT.....these events are scheduled trail runs with bubbleboy Jeeps with a whole pile of whooping and holering.....its just not for me....ESPECIALLY with 30 Jeeps on one trail....stereos blasting etc etc etc....

What I want to see is a Trophy inspired event.....even Dakar in nature....

Long term endurance trek 4x4 travel.....like the old original Camel Trophy before it got into other events....

This has to be possible.....the motivation and drive to make it is the only thing holding us back.
