Why does "size matter" in N.America???

I've had 65 cars, trucks and trailers since 1986, ranging in size from a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite (65 mpg) to a 1977 Dodge W300 (3 mpg).

The Sprite was fun and the Dodge was big.

I'm stuck now with a fleet of Mitsubishi Monteros, a Mighty Max turbo with 200hp, and an '05 GMC Sierra crewcab...all which drive at best of 15-16 mpg.

I would gladly trade up to a Landcruiser LC70 with the stated 4.5L diesel and many of the Aussie-market workings and be totally happy. I'd add a simple service body and the package would be complete.

This long thread started out as complaining about the big US trucks. I've had a few of them, often no better than 6 - 8 mpg. However, at the times I owned them, their purpose was served. I could not safely haul 110-gallons of water with my little Dodge Raider, now could I?

An OMG comment on a vehicle I was forced to drive by necessity:
The Levis-edition 1975 AMC Pacer I drove for a year in college was proportionally fat, same side to side interior space as a LUV truck, but as wide as the Brontosaur in Cabazon. The 232ci L6 should have returned better than 6 mpg and did not. I could hold about 1/6 cord of wood, convenient for geology field trips. A/C didn't work. And, it didn't have a licorice whip dispenser inside!

As for my for dream Toyota, well - it is not imported here. I regularly get messages and updates from Toyota Australia, though. :smiley_drive:

Just FYI, a lot of those trucks we dream about and are mentioned in this thread....that we can't have in the USA. Well, they are not all exactly super fuel efficient trucks. You 4.5 & 4.8L Patrol petrol engines are gas hogs. Your twin turbo diesel in the new 70-series Cruisers, don't exactly get 30mpg. Keep this in mind when dreaming about these trucks.... :)

Me? I figure whatever, if I like a truck I am going to drive it. Me driving some super fuel efficient vehicle that gets 50+mpg is not going to change the world or make oil last any longer. I am also well aware you can't change the world. And pushing your views on other people, worst of all through laws, is about as un-free as it gets.

I am aware that the LC engine won't be so super efficient. However, compare the relative size of the vehicle to competition here. The LC70 is no larger than the Tacoma? Smaller than a domestic 1-ton with similar carriage capacity, that is what I am after.

in high school my Mother took me in the F700 to hockey and track practice @ 4.25 mpg
yes we drove it to fast food establishments, wouldn't fit in drive thru, had to park. ran over a deer without noticing, only some guts and fur to show. is that horrible, and excessive? it was eventually sold. and dad takes 2 trips @ 8mpg with the k30 and trailer. But for bulk the F700 was more efficient

I have a GMC S-15 (24mpg), and a ford escort (30mpg) for myself and wife. the S-15 is big enough to tow a m416 or teardrop and not too big for city streets or decent MPG in the process. My CJ5 is not physically bigger than the S-15 but gets 1/2 the MPG.

generally Americans live in suburbs and drive on wide fast highways where a land yacht is not a driver problem but a "safer transport". everyone wants something for the worst case scenario without thought of what will do the task. quite realistically most (myself included) could ride a motorcycle to work but they don't want to get cold, wet, or experience road rash.

how does something smaller have similar capacities to something bigger?

Not really here
So the other day, I had a dream that I was an ant and I could crawl down in the ant hills and see what those crazy little ants were doing down there. I found an "ant bar" with ants drinking some kind of sap beer and watching there fellow ants play rugby on a tv taped to the wall. These guys were tough as nails and every time there was a score they would take shots of some nectar whiskey and cheer. Every time they cheered, their little pincers would spread wide and the antennas on there heads to flail about. I was amazed at how intricate the dwellings were down there and the time they spent working. Since there was no light in the tunnels, they had 30 hour work days and would never sleep.

Oh, sorry just trying to divert attention off of this thread. Is it working?

What I include in this statement is the ability to carry a similar payload on a dimensionally smaller chassis. The LC70 is about 70% the overall dimensions of an F250. ...Boils down to that I want an LC70 and can't purchase one in the domestic market.

I OWN AN F350 7.3L CREW CAB TRUCK. I also own an 80 series Landcruiser. I own other vehicles as well. I/m not obese. Not even fat.

I apologize for the over-sized truck. I only use it to tow my Airstream trailer, boats, and to carry my 3-4 bird dogs, water, gear drawers, and miscellaneous gear on trips. When not towing, it gets 19 MPG - about 7 MPG MORE than my 'little' Landcruiser.

I suggest that those who think this type of truck is 'overkill' or 'ridiculous' get over it.

The 70 series V8 diesel has a single turbo......
