Why not a Hummer?

^^^ agree
just the knowledge of the fact that if i really need to, i can escape, i can drive off to some extremely remote area if im having a horrible week and just get away from it all. relax for a bit and let my mind reset. its a very pleasant reassuring prospect.
i guess that's a part of why hummer owners, as well as all offroaders own the rigs they do. it gives them that feeling

an old 75 series land cruiser did the drc. When the h1 does that i will be impressed.

i will be impresses to see the 75 land cruiser to go over an IED or to be droped from the air plane. Or run on 80 used trans oil. Or have 18" ground clearance or tow a 18 wheeler or drove 40% side slope or pump tires from inside or have 70% aproche angle,or cary 5000 lb pay load. Should i go on????

Come on be real. what part of the h1 is not 10 times stronger and more capable ?

I would be impressed if there wasn't so many grammar or spelling mistakes. ;)

Hmmwvs are awesome trucks though.

Even the fully armored HMMWV's don't fare well with IED's. The rest of the stats don't fit with the armored HMMWV's either. They are greatly hampered by the weight of the armor.

But past that, I think you mixed % and ° because it is 40° side slope, 72° approach (37.5° departure). The listed ground clearance is 16", and I don't find the 5000lb payload listed for the civilian model, but I do for the HMMWV. The H1 is listed at between 2500lb and 3000lbs depending on where you get the info (probably because of the wagon vs rag top versions. I did find that the HMMWV weighs about 2000lbs less than the H1 which I found interesting. so that may be the added payload.

interesting stuff. But the thing I found most damming about the thing about it was that the passenger room (legroom mostly) was less than that of a mini cooper (new model). even the hip room is tiny compared to the mini. head room and shoulder room are more, but when you are already up against the door, it doesn't mean much. I have spent a bit of time in and around them, and it would be 'neat'. but I wouldn't buy one, as there are other 4wd's that I would rather spend the money on.

neat package though.

GVWR is 10,300. Curb is 6814 (soft top) 7154 (hard top). you do the math.
an H1 cannot carry 5000lbs, but an HMMWV can. (it has less curb weight)

and yeah increasing tire size will increase ground clearance. Stock size was 37x12.5-17.

My point was mainly, that what you posted was not possible with all with the same vehicle. The M1114 (armored for your IED) is only capable of 2400lbs of payload, nor can it tow an 18 wheeler as it has a 4200lb towing capacity. even the unladen H1 is maxed at 9000lbs.

It sounds to me that you love these things, which is fine. I am just pointing out innaccuracies in what you posted.

What is "it" that says the H1 has a 5000lb capacity? Link me somewhere. I have looked at every site I can find GVWR specs on the H1.

I have pulled a semi truck out of a sloped loading dock with my v6 4runner. also see the youtube link below. Yes it is "cool" that the H1's pulled/pushed whatever, but it is not really a big deal.

on the 10lb thing. I really hope you are joking. 10.000lbs != 10,000lbs

it says in the hummer h1 add it can cary 5000 lb. in fact it can tow 18 wheeller and push a 35 passenger tour bus. on low range its very powerful.

i think any of this are way more than 10.000 lb :)

well what my point is that there are mnay ppl using h1s for expo, and i am sure it can do a lot more than many other 4x4s can. the only down side is, its slow. very big, expencive, with limited visibility,

but its a tank

as far as 5000 lb load, its on youtube official add for the hummer h1

From the manufacturer. The 5000lb capacity is for Extended capacity HMMWV models ONLY. Not the H1.

I am not saying that 3146lbs (H1 hardtop) is not impressive (it is), but you can get that same performance out of a 4dr 3/4 ton truck. for less price, a warranty, better mileage, parts availability, driver and passenger comfort, and passenger count. It will not be nearly as cool though.

An H1 can be over-loaded to carry that much weight and it does fine...just don't do any extreme wheeling at that weight or you may break stuff. Redrover is probably referring to the 12100 lb k- series trucks which were always available (and still are in fleet purchases). Btw, the numbers that are posted sometimes do not seem too impressive (the 60% grade/40% sideslope/30" fording depth) but these numbers are at full gross vehicle weight, all day long. The approach/departure/ground clearance numbers are hard to beat. The long wheelbase gives it a bad breakover, but adds to it's stability (as does it's width). Comparing this vehicle to a 4 dr 3/4 ton truck is silliness. One is built for the masses, one for a specific purpose. Different design perameters.

As far as passenger legroom...it is tight. But put the seat all the way back in some of these smaller cars (my friend has a mini and my dd is a mazda 3) and there is no chance of getting a human in the back seat. There are aftermarket kits and mods are easy enough to do to remedy this issue if you are over 6'.

I know Redrover personally and he has owned nearly every truck out there. He still owns two series rovers (one he just swapped the engine to a 6.2) in addition to his h1 wagon. So I know he has a love for any offroad truck and expedition vehicle. We both drool over the Endecker G's. But we also love the capabilities of our trucks. Different trucks, differemt over-all capabilities and advantages/disadvantages.

LOL, yah it's a pretty narrow trail

Hell of a run.

Ah...the Congo. No, I don't think these trucks would do well in the dense jungles...or fair well with the local authorities who would most likely "liberate" it from us. Like I said, different strengths and weanesses.

Went through the whole thread...what an adventure! Probably much more fun.to look back on than go through at the time :)

There used to be a group called the Hummer Outlaws who made annual expeditions in the American southwest. The vehicles were fully kitted out for expeditionary travel. Their website was what got me interested in Hummer H1 vehicles. I was very sorry when they disbanded and took down their website. I still miss it.
