Why the Toyota Land Cruiser is so expensive

The amount of Toyota love here is staggering. And scary. It's a good truck to be sure but man you guys are in serious phan-boy territory here. I think one or two of you might have reached the big O just at the mention of LC.

It would be interesting to see this topic discussed in other places. In here it's sort of like preaching to the choir. While I don't expect anything different given the user base here, you have to admit this isn't exactly an unbiased bunch.

I think understandably so as there are only a handful of make/models with as much heritage as the Land Cruiser.

Corvette, Skyline, Porsche 911 off the top of my head... yet arguably none with as much positive impact on the well being of mankind as the beloved LC. Thoughts?

Corvette - maybe, certainly an important vehicle
Skyline - Really? Seems a niche vehicle at best. Maybe I just don't understand it? Was it ever sold outside of Japan?
911 - certainly
.
As a Land Rover owner, I'd have to throw the Defender up there as well. Very definitely an icon in the automotive world. And I suppose you'd also have to include the Jeep since it was the one who both the LC and the Defender grew from.
.
But that sort of gets away from the original discussion of the durability v. cost and takes us into a whole different world of over-all significance to the automotive world. We'd have to start looking at things like the Beetle, the Model T, the 2CV, etc.
.
I just sort of found it interesting as an outsider to see such emotion over a Toyota product. My personal LC experience is extremely limited so perhaps it's hard for me to understand. I have had some Toyota experience, and it wasn't enjoyable. From what I've seen Toyota usually garners loyalty but rarely enthusiasm. That's what got my attention in this thread - the enthusiasm for the LC.

I think the Landcruiser and Porsche 911 are peas-in-a-pod. You could drive an 80 series and 993, literally, until the end of time.

@zelatore - If you don't think Toyota garners enthusiasm, consult the following owner-bases:

Supra / Carolla / Land Cruiser / 4runner / Taco / MR2 / Celica / LFA (yes, it's a Toyota) / 2000 GT etc...

Don't worry, we'll still give you a ride after the air suspension dies on your LR3 while you're in the middle of nowhere. We'll just follow the trail of oil... :ylsmoke:

You might well have me on the air suspension, though if you're looking for the trail of oil you'll be out of luck. Rarely are there actual mechanical issues with the current gen of Rovers. My rig has never had an actual mechanical problem or dripped a single drop in 120K miles. Computer problems though? Uh...well... Usually it's not actually a problem at all, but a sensor that's monitoring a system has a glitch and tells the computers there's something wrong when in fact there isn't.

I know I'm not Toyota material and I'm not trying to pick a fight or claim Rovers are superior. I just found this thread surprising is all.

I've owned two new range rovers since 2011. Both have had some pretty serious electrical, suspension failures. One time the dealer said we don't know why it happened but if it happens again just bring it back in. Lol

Land Rover continues its race toward the bottom in all major reliability studies. Ymmv. No mas4me.

Agree 100% I have a 200 series LC and a 991 911.

Not that I put much stock in most of these studies, but in the interest of not perpetuating a stereotype this isn't exactly true. JDPowers has given out several awards to LR in recent years - shocking though that may sound.

I'm not trying to argue a Rover is more reliable than a Cruiser - I don't believe that and even if I did I wouldn't try that argument here. But on the other hand there's no point in exaggerating things by playing on a stereotype.

I'm not only speaking factually here (Google is your enemy), I cite from actual ownership experience.

It'd be absurd for anyone to argue that Land Rover products are more reliable than Toyota. It's like you trying to convince others that a night with Roseanne Barr is more thrilling than say Beyoncé.

Prior to my 15 years of Land cruiser ownership, I owned a disco I, and disco II. Loved them, but, the inherent maintenance nightmares they induced, drove me to Toyota. I could never go back based on those experiences.

Maybe this thread should be changed to: why are landcruisers so expensive, and land rovers so cheap? Seems to be where the discussion is headed. Well, I think we all know the answer......
