Why the Toyota Land Cruiser is so expensive

As a former LC owner and now owner of a 07 Sequoia I will tell you why. #1 space yes there is a difference and a big enough one to force me to sell my cherry LC and get a Sequoia. Having said that todays Sequoia is too damn big given we just spent yesterday in San Francisco with 8 family members doing the Tourist guide thing with the Sequoia which easily fit the tight parking situations in SF. The new one would have been an epic pain in the A--ss to take. And no the LC would not seat 8 with three decent sized people in the 3rd row.

Last of all the LC mileage is pretty dismal when I had mine I just didn't care given thats what you get with an LC. The typical 4-5mpg increase in averages we get with the Sequoia has been very nice! Is it a LC? No! but with the advanced traction hunting systems on the newer one's dumping the soccer mom steps and putting decent tires on the Sequoia it easily can meet the needs of what 99.98% of the LC owners do with their LC's except all while posting better mileage and offering up more seating room for the butts in seats hauling needs. We treat our Sequoia like a highly capable Sienna yes its been off road it did a Gwagen trip north of the Rubicon with some friends last year fun trip did great but dumping the soccer mom steps would have made it more fun, a rear locker would have made it pretty damn good too. Is it a LC? Hell no!!!

I think either a Sequoia or LC would be equally impractical for the urban activities your are describing.

Also, according to the EPA, the Sequoia actually gets worse mpg than the 200 series LC:

The JD Powers type survey are usually based on people who lease cars and trade them in after they hit 30k to 50k miles - so I don't always think there is that much to them other than than when there is a bad rating. If you look into some of the reported issues its with things like the entertainment system / bluetooth etc.

It's not a new platform, a trim update on the 200 Series platform. Akin to the 1st gen and 2nd gen 100 Series differences.

You could say that there were 3 generations of the 100 Series LC in a way; the 98-02, the 03-05, and the 06-07. They seem to be doing exactly the same with the 200; '08-'11, '13-'15, and probably '16-'17+, I would expect the successor to the 200 Series to maybe be here as a 2018 model, just a hunch.

The LC is very popular with large families in San Francisco for one major reason it fits in a standard parking spot on the street between driveways. That is exactly why we bought ours it fit in the same spot our subaru was parked in out front of our house and allowed us to haul 7 people when needed. Also due to the low cut window design it was very easy to parallel park through out the city. Toyota trucks are not known for good mileage the LC for sure LOL.

LR funny pic - not mine

This is one of the best ever LR jokes out there.

Very strange - the only two cars I have any interest in are Land Cruisers and 911's. Need to get a 911.

Because of it's well deserved reputation for possessing rock solid dependability and capability. Unfortunately it's morphed into luxury vehicle for the wealthy only here in the U.S., where it doesn't seem to have quite the snob appeal of a Land Rover. Over seas big shots know better. :)

Friend of mine is a Porsche enthusiast, but is looking for a truck or SUV. I'm doing my best to steer him towards a 100 series.

Good luck with that sell...porsches are the exact opposite of Toyota trucks in terms of handling and feel. As much as I love my truck, I get nostalgic longings for my old BMW when I see a porsche or sporty German car fly by me.

If this is true, it's the smartest thing Toyota has done since announcing they were building a modern "FJ40". The concept was fantastic. The product they actually brought to market is a bad joke. Go ahead and extol the virtues of that thing, but I drove them stock, and modified, on and off road, and I found very few things to like and a really long list of things to dislike!

I agree 100% that Toyota wastes a massive amount of money developing USA only trucks and SUVs. Unfortunately we to the north of you have suffered as well since they stopped importing the 70 series here in 1987. If they offered basic utility rigs here still, I'd have more Toyotas in the driveway!

Agreed. My friend had a 6cyl manual no A/C(fugetabout,gotta have A/C) 1970 Landcruiser. Aside from ballast resister issues that truck was reliable and reasonably comfortable. I see the products Toyota and Nissan offer overseas and ask myself,"why not here?" The profit margin would be less but sheer volume of sales would increase.

They don't sell those models here because outside of forums like these, there is no real market. The majority of Americans want a living room with wheels, even as an off road rig. Go spend some time on TacomaWorld and listen to the complaints on how plain jane the 2nd gen Tacoma is. People like us get it, but most don't.

... I cite from actual ownership experience.

... It's like you trying to convince others that a night with Roseanne Barr is more thrilling than say Beyoncé.

I can appreciate a lot of different vehicles and their qualities however:

A. A few thousand miles in an overpriced bling-machine does not make one an expert on the "experience" of Land Rover

B. "Thrilling" can be fun for a few months, whereas intellect and wit can last a lifetime ;)

I do not think that is such a hard sell.
I drive both a 99 modded Landcruiser and 2014 GTR they go well together, speed and slow are a great combination

At least with range rovers you buy your ticket into the feigned theater of prestige whereas the lr3/4/disco is at best a poor excuse of a build displaying neither intellect nor wit; rather, myopia and a healthy dose of ****** were you thinking. ;)
