If you've never seen the Canon 400 f/2.8, its a monster and the lens you'll see on the sidelines of most sports arenas. There is a reason for that. The front element, or front glass is about the size of a bowling ball. It will take in a ton of light and allow you to get some amazing shots.

This is one of those lenses my 1st photography teacher described as "all glass". It makes sense when you see one up close (or hold one), big aperture lenses are so much fun, but HEAVY.

Not to get too far off topic, but they arent fun to hand hold. I can only snap off a few shots before my arms start to shake. The lens by itself is a hefty 11.8 lbs

That's why I said I was lucky to get that sharp of a shot by hand holding it. It is Image Stabilized, so that helps, but all that glass is heavy

Driving along the Pacific Coast HWY in Northern California, I never thought I'd see these crossing the road

That's a Jeep Grand Cherokee behind them waiting for them to cross. Can you imagine hitting one of these suckers!!! Forget a bull bar because they're going through your windshield:Wow1:

great thread! :)

I wish I had got pictures of the locals who had a road block in Mexico, it was rather large. Or the cow I saw hit and slide across the pavement then get up and run off. Or the 8ft boa on the road in Panama...but alas I did not. :(

Just make sure you're not in New York when you're shooting with that lens. People might mistaken you as holding a mini rocket launcher.

Got a crazy scare one day while out shooting on the coast.

Coastguard chopper was buzzing the coastline pretty low as the wife and I were waiting for an Eagle to come back to its nest.

I picked the lens up like I have it in the photo above to see the helicopter better and as I did it, it slowed down considerable and everyone aboard looked at us

I know the Coast Guards dont have weapons onboard like the gunships do, but it still made me drop the lens pretty fast as I realized what they were thinking...Yes, I can be dumb like that sometimes

No pics on this computer, but I have lots of stories!

Sheep in New Zealand stopped us for about 20 minutes. A LOT of sheep walked past our rental during that 20 minutes!!!
Also in NZ we had a mudslide not quite block the road, but hit the side of the rental and almost push us into the ocean! :Wow1::Wow1:
In Jasper it's a regular occurrence to get stopped by the bighorns, and in town there's usually deer or elk wandering around.

My first trail (not road) blockage that I can remember was when I was mountain biking in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario. I think I was around 18 or so.
I was heading down the back side of a the trail, had a big head of steam and came over a ridge (getting a bit of air) and I see this HUGE moose cow straddling across the tight single track I was headed down.
My eyes went about 10x the size of this guy --> :Wow1:
I slammed on my brakes and luckily the day was a muddy one, and as I gripped the lever the brakes squealed very loudly. The cow was not looking at me, but still bolted off the path after hearing the noise.
I was pretty lucky because I ended up sliding about 8 feet past where the moose was standing.
And if you've ever seen the size of a moose, you know a normal mtn bike would probably go right under it's belly, and I would have taken the impact on my head/shoulders.
That is still the closest I've ever been to a moose, and I'm fine with standing back 100 yds or so. ;)

Adam, I bet you had shorts filled with Mud after that encounter!!!

Fergie, the camoflague on that Quail is about as perfect as it could get. It basically can hide right out in the open

Pat,

I'm significantly color blind; as such, natural animal camo doesnt work on me...great for hunting.

Reptilian Ranger

Just after crossing into Grand Canyon National Park on my dirt bike I encountered this sign

And a short distance past the sign, Rupert the Reptilian Ranger slithered out from his hiding place to warn me that dirt bikes were not allowed. Alas, he was left gnashing his fangs in frustration when he discovered the Yamaha was street-legal, plated, registered, insured.....

Desert Eagle, that thing is HUGE!!!:Wow1: That would leave me shakin in my boots

Fangars, love the angles of the photos for the snake shots and the turtle shot looks hilarious. Like it saw your truck and just went into defense mode

Great shots of the rattler, Fangars! And unusual. I've been running around the desert for 40+ years now and have come across a great number of rattlers. The ones I see are NEVER stretched out in a straight line like that - they were always in an S-curve, always ready to strike if needed. You must have caught this guy kicking back, sunning and relaxing! As far as the tortoise, they seem to be very tolerant of activity around them as long as it doesn't get up close and personal to them. Years ago I was photographing an off-road race just outside of Vegas and came across a tortoise calmly chomping away on some plant while 30 feet away those extremely loud race rigs were flying by at 80 mph.
Pat, that is a gopher snake (most call them bull snakes around here) and they are completely harmless but they do grow to nearly 6 feet long. They are prolific hunters of rodents; I've plenty living around my place and I leave them be. Even my daughter at a very young age learned to put on some gloves, pick one up if it came into the yard, and take it back out into the desert. They also eat birds and bird eggs - here is a shot of one I found in my barn, in a bird's nest it had just cleaned out. This was at the top of a 13 foot post - how he got up there I surely don't know!
