Will LR4 prices hold?

Life is forcing me downsize to a single vehicle & I have a buyer for my current trucks & motorcycle.

I'm choosing between the LR3 and LR4. The LR3 has never really spoken to me but for some reason the LR4 does -- it's slimmer, more graceful looking IMO. I really, really like Scott Brady's truck.

Nice '08 LR3s with low miles are in that $20k range and in some cases sub-$20k. I'm forcing myself to like them, but.. sigh.

I'm considering buying an LR4 new. I can get a 2013 "bare bones" w/HD package in the mid to high 40s.

My only concern is dealing with the precipitous Rover price drop -- one most of us take advantage of! -- over the next 5 years. Sub 40k-mile 2010s seem to be holding high 30s to low 40s. By my estimation that's significantly better resale than the LR3 and certainly more than any other Disco. Do you think the 2010s will drop another $10k in the next 2-4 years? Or has LR finally built a non-Defender capable of holding onto its value for a few years?

Anyone have any thoughts? And yes, we all understand the apocryphal "drive it off the lot and it loses $5k!"

How much do you think a 2013 LR4 with 50k-60k miles will command in 2017-2019?

If you want a new LR4, get it. But I suspect you'll be lucky to get $20k for it in '17-'19.

So...you are wondering if brand new a Luxury SUV will hold its value...

Considering the price of 10 year old D2 trucks, the answer to that is No. However if you wish to buy a new LR4 and have it until the end of time then I think it'll be a good investment. However if you trade it in 5 years from now I think you'll be upset that the cash they offer you will be significantly lower than what you paid for it.

In the long run I dont see why the LR4 would depreciate any less then the LR3's did? The only time i would by new is if I were to keep it for 10+ years. If an LR4 scratches you itch then go for it. I think you'll be hard pushed to make a financial case for it though!

I just went through this moving from a D1 that was mainly an offroad/hunting truck to something that had to do that, and be driven daily. I decided to go with a 2005 LR3 SE in excellent shape with 87,000 miles, and a great service record. The truck is a bare bones SE with the V8. I paid under $16,000.

There are a number of reasons I went this route. First, at that price I didn't feel bad about dragging it along a mesquite tree. Most of the loss in value was eaten up by the original owner, so if I decided I didn't like it I could get out of it without a huge loss. The last being I don't have a $40,000 plus car payment which frees up cash for upgrades.

The LR3 is light years ahead of a D1 in every area outside of looks (A lifted D1 on 235/85's just looks tough). Drive one on and offroad and you'll forget about an LR4. LR3 and Sports are all over used car lots in Phoenix. Take a weekend and come up and drive a few, heck you could drive mine.

If you buy the "bare bones" LR4 it will not hold its value as well as the HSE with navigation etc. not many people want the bare bones ones.

^this is true in some cases, untrue in others. I personally searched for half a year for a bare bones DII so I didn't have to worry about things failing like the sunroof and fancy electronics. Who knows if that'll change again though.

For guys like us, barebones and HD packages are what we want. However the average consumer doesn't want anything that doesn't have all the bells and whistles. I've heard of people walking away from vehicle purchases simply because it didn't have a sunroof. To some people, the number of cup holders is a crucial selling point.

Whatever.

So how long are you expecting to keep this truck? I assume it will be for at least 5 years or so? I just did a good search and the LR4 is expected to depreciate by $24,000 within 5 years (http://autos.aol.com/cars-Land+Rover-LR4-2012/cost-to-own/). However These depreciation ratings indicate that the LR4 does not depreciate as badly as the Range Rover (https://www.alg.com/products/depreciation-ratings.html).

Either way, the LR4 is one awesome ride.

So what we really want is the LR3 with the LR4 5.0 V8? :victory:

For me, if I really plan to keep it a looonnnng time, then the initial mileage is less of a concern then the initial condition - as the mileage will be inconsequential after a short time. I also think that the LR3 interior will wear better in the long haul then the LR4 one will. I will admit that judging from LR4 pictures (and actual LR3 experience) I tend to prefer the more purposeful and slightly utilitarian LR3 setup, inside and outside. I'll take the mechanical improvements though.

I do wonder to what level the software tweaks to the HDC and traction control LR4 make it 'better' offroader.

I really want a TDV8 or whatever in an LR4 with HD package!

I wouldn't mind having a new LR4 with an HD package. Would be female-approved AND it would bring the win in the woods. Also it would be new. I must admit it, I like most of the new cars.
