Will you buy an extra large phone?

Samsung, HTC, Sony, Nokia, LG, and Asus all have announced phones with screens approaching 6 inches, measured diagonally. The body of such phones is about 6 inches long by 3 inches wide. (Phones with a 5 inch display are closer to 5.25 by 2.75 inches.) Most people can't hold a 6 inch phone securely with one hand, and these monster phones are difficult to operate with just one hand.

This article captures the feelings that many people have when they use a 6 inch phone: "I hate how gigantic the Samsung Galaxy Note is ... but I can't put it down!"

Will you buy one of these extra-large models? How large is too large?

I agree with the author, I recently switched to an HTC One and it's borderline too big—and this is coming from someone that almost never uses their phone as a phone (I used a whopping 40 minutes last month). It's a blessing and a curse: the phone is a little big to talk on or pocket carry, but it's just right in the car to act as both a stereo replacement and on-board navigation.

My next phone will probably be a large form factor, the note is one I'm looking at

why carry a tablet and a phone ? when one unit does both

I think I'd get a blue tooth earset for calls though ........as it probably looks naff holding the big thing against your head

as I get older my eye's get worse -so the big screen is awsome

and carrying arround a dell precision is a pain..

We recently dropped apple and moved to android/samsung and am loving the platform- yep the plasticy feel is there but once you add a cover its gone

Two more observations:

Car companies are quickly inking deals with cell phone carriers to add on-the-go Internet connectivity. The in-car entertainment and navigation system is a big money maker for the auto manufacturers. So the manufacturers want you to buy from them, rather than use your own phone/tablet.

The phone makers are already experimenting with adding phone service to devices with a 7 inch screen. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Huawei Mediapad 7 Vogue and Asus FonePad offer tablet computing with the ability to make a voice call using traditional cell service (not VOIP). These devices are offered in markets outside North America.

Absolutely NOT. Dudes look absolutely ridiculous with these huge phones stuffed in their pockets. Lineman can just sub two of those phones in their pants instead of thigh pads. Bo knows those phones, but he wouldn't wear one off the gridiron. If apple made a smaller iphone, I'd buy it.

Probably not. The extra inch of screen doesn't provide enough benefits over a 5" screen to justify putting up with the larger overall size. At least for me & how I use my phone.

Not for me.

When we got new phones, my wife went with a Samsung Galaxy, but I opted for a Kyocera Torque. Since it doesn't required a case for protection, it fits in a pocket easily, and it has sufficient landscape for the smartphone features I use (text, email, weather, navigation, calendar, etc.). Camera sux, but I can live with it.

If I were into Candy Crush, it might be different...

Use my phone for work email, web surfing, facebook, & text (with virtual keypad), so love the 5.3" screen on my Note II phablet. At some point, I'll probably upgrade to a Note III with the 5.5" screen. If 5.3" isn't an issue for me, an extra 0.2" likely isn't going to change that.

I also have an 8" Galaxy Tab 3, a Google Nexus 10, an i7 1080p PC Ultrabook, & a behemoth i7 PC laptop with 17" 1080p screen, so I can pick whatever form factor suits me or is relevant to the task at hand.

But, while I often take my Google Nexus 10 tablet with me, I like the flexibility of having a phone with a large screen for productivity, since I pretty much always have my phablet on me.

Been casually checking out the Samsung Mega but it only has 720 screen. I'm sure things will update fast. I'd buy an IPad mini if it had the phone ( which I really only use for text 99% of the time).

No. If it doesn't fit in my pocket it's worthless.

My eyes are going bad, too, but all that means is I now have to make sure I carry my glasses with me everywhere I go (I don't need them for driving, as I'm farsighted, but I need them in order to read.)

Wife and I just got our first smartphones, went with the iPhone 4s. Small, but big enough to do what we need to do and still feel comfortable in my pocket even with a protective case on it (mine is a Trident.)

A phone as big as a small tablet would be very likely to get dropped, lost or forgotten.

No, I'm holding out for the communicator implant, hands free, optic and audio nerve receptor connections with GPS. :coffeedrink:
