Changing out cable for synthetic is being done more often nowadays. The issue of using synthetic is that you must be attentive to how it feeds up onto the drum as well as the amount of heat the winch can generate. Many lines now come with a heat shield that will typically cover the 1st rollon. You want that no matter what. For the issue of rolling onto the drum is that synthetic has more friction and will bind on itself. What happens is that a bulge will develop and the rope can slip down past itself. As that accumulates the load develops extremely fast b/c it becomes more of a line load than a distributed load. The result is a buckled drum. To avoid this the operator must be attentive to push/pulling (gloves on) the rope as its getting pulled onto the drum. Yes....depending on the angle, fairlead, etc. this may require a bit of in/out attempts. While rope is safer and much more manageable, it does need more attention and care. I'm one that swapped from cable to a Master Pull on the cheap HF 12K. Only issue is that it's so slow that you want to gouge your eyes out with a spoon. I don't mind it one bit.

That's a factory Ford bumper with a Warn Transformer 2 winch mount. Pretty much the same setup I want to get for my truck. It bolts onto the frame in place of the factory recovery eyes. There's a recovery hook on each side of the mount that doesn't show up in that pic.

Its a Warn mount,,,works with stock bumper. Has pull points on each side of the mount,,also has an optional 3" receiver mount underneath.

10K lbs and up I'd go with a Ramsey worm drive. Second to none. 9K and under, warn classics or superwinch.

My 1994.5 F350 had a 5-spd ZF5 which has the PTO plate than can be removed for a PTO driven accessory. I would have killed to get my hands on a PTO winch.

AAA certified recovery specialist, I have used PTO, hydraulic and electric winches. I have a 10.5k mile marker hydraulic on my truck now with http://www.masterpull.com/29-64-superline-xd-winch-line-29-700-lbs/. A PTO would be my preference, the hydraulic is second place but more easily found and installed.
Sure it's slow and the engine has to be running for it to work but it's over 15 years old and has never given me any problems. It doesn't heat up like electrics and won't melt synthetic rope powering in or out. I can winch all day long without any concerns. Using an electric winch without the engine running will only last a few minuites, then you have to hope the engine will start when you're done. I did burn up one WARN 8k on my '94 jeep cherokee, never agian!

I have a question for ya.... how long can you power out a warn electric winch without burning up the brake and drive line?

When I've got that poor cab over AAA truck hauling my truck up onto it, I notice that winch is quite slow. However you are literally only pulling 1 car length and actually being slow is nice. No sudden movements, no issues.
However on the trail, fast winches are the way to go. So much time can get eaten up by slow winches, its amazing. You don't care about that until you've gotta get 5 trucks through a giant crap hole of misery. Then all of a sudden you see the dude with the 8274 blow through it. Makes a HUGE difference.
My M12000 is slower than Christmas. But in general my entire truck is slow so its like, deal with it. Also I somehow always get stuck the worse.
Either way, it amazes me that I have to point out to the AAA guys that I have front recovery points. Even then half of them actually use it.

Warn 8274, I've been beating mine for 10 years now and it's still pulling my 80 series Landcruiser through everything I need to get through. It's been on three rigs now and has pulled countless full size trucks out that I wouldn't hesitate to put one on you vehicle. 8274 is a great winch, built to last (PS. mine was built in 1981).

I won't answer the question for Andy, but I've never been successful trying to push a vehicle with my winch line. You?:elkgrin:

I've got a milemarker E-8000, never maintained it, switched to synthetic last year, works great. Although local 4x4 shop is recommending a rebuild as they aren't crazy about the sounds it's making. Maybe come winter I'll yank it off and let them tear it down. Have thought of replacing it with something in the 9K to 9500K range.
