Tire Update
So, a bit of an update on the tires.
Yesterday, pretty much the entirety of Montana got hit by a pretty good snowstorm. Tuesday temps were up around 55F at 3:00 PM. Yesterday at the same time it was 4F. We got a good three or four inches of snow blanketing the ground, and I took the opportunity to test the tires, and the truck, out a bit more.
In 2+ inches of snow, these tires work really well. Zero sliding or spinning with the proper throttle control. They hang on and carve through the snow really well. Again, with proper throttle control, they managed to pull through most stuff in 2wd.
The roads quickly became slick with packed snow and ice, and this revealed a slight flaw, not in the tires, but in the truck. With proper throttle control, they do pretty well for what they are. They're no snow tire, but they handle themselves pretty well on slick stuff. However, the issue is with the truck. I say exercise proper throttle control because I have learned that a lighter truck such as this when equipped with a supercharged engine is... sketchy in the snow. With the typical VG33E this is no problem. I've driven base model Frontiers in slick conditions, not much drama. But this truck is very touchy. You have to be super ginger with the pedal or the tires will break loose in a straight line or send you into a slide when cornering. That engine just wants to wind up in a hurry. You even look at the pedal wrong and away those tires go.
That being said, these skinny Terra Trac D/T's make the sliding very predictable and very controllable. I have not once felt (and I've tried) like I was about to lose control of the truck. They really do just bite in and hang on, giving a good amount of traction despite the best attempts of that VG33ER up in front.
So, as far as the tires are concerned, I'm still confident in my decision. I am thinking of pulling off the supercharger belt again though
