I have a 78 CJ-5 to handle the things my 06 Dodge 2500 crew-cab diesel can't :)

I've had both. I still have the 5.9 CR Cummins. I do 90% of my driving on paved surfaces, and the diesel shines there. It gets over 20 mpg without babying it, great for an 8000 pound truck.

My 2006 has been trouble free so far, 88K miles. I have the 5.9 48RE combo, both have been solid and reliable. We tow a travel trailer that weighs about 8K loaded and have no problems in the mountains. The 5.9 gets us 17-18 in town and 20+ on the highway. The truck is all stock, Fleetguard oil...

Our 4.7 WJ has 278K on it (99), and has been owned by almost everyone in our family at one time or another. It is on transmission number 2, but the 4.7 is going strong.

We considered new, ended up buying a clean 06 Dodge 2500 with a 5.9. Great truck.

I was in a similar position last year, 2008 Chevy 5.3 or a 2006 Dodge 5.9 turbodiesel. I went with the Dodge and I'm glad I did. The SBC is a great engine, but the Cummins diesel is amazing :sombrero:. BTW, Dodge trucks aren't near as bad as lots of people claim. Mine is quite nice, comfortable...

I had a 98 Dodge 1/2 ton, and it was a good truck. Problem free for almost 200K. I replaced it with a 2006 2500 w/ Cummins engine, which has also been a good truck. It's all stock, maintenance done according to schedule, and reliability is outstanding.

I agree, however my diesel pick-up isn't my DD, so my maintenance costs are somewhat lower due to less mileage/wear-and-tear. My truck is more for work and recreation. My Subaru Forester handles the daily transportation grind. My CJ-5 is the street-legal off-road toy :smiley_drive:.

Sorry to hear that about the Ford E350 :eek: Most of the ambulances hereabouts are Ford Vans (or cutaway vans) with diesel power. My son is a paramedic and spends LOTS of time in a Ford diesel van.

I believe that poster was talking about injectors for a 12-valve Cummins. My 2006 CR Cummins uses injectors that cost quite a bit more :(
