Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I spend more time traveling than staying online. I don't have a blog, but I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. I have been mapping all the original trails and roads and been having a ball doing so.

Using a compass: Books, Videos, Classes?

The best book I have seen is the Military manual "Map Reading and Land Navigation (FM 21-26)". You can get this manual free from here.

Using an EMCOMM or Go Box as a flexible comm solution?

I have a FT-7900 in a Go Box that I built. I got a second face for the radio so when it is in the vehicle I attach the face and external speaker that is hard mounted in the truck, then when in a mobile configuration I use the other face that I keep in the case. I built a mounting system in the...

Chrismc is right in that the devolper does not ignore your issues or questions. If you find a bug in the system, there is usally an update with in a day or two. Tim

    Is this possible??

Glad to hear. I believe it rivials many of the stand alone GPS systems out there. Mainly because you have so much flexablity. Also, I like the fact that you can keep seperate files on your SD card of all your tracks and waypoints. Tim

    Is this possible??

I use my phone as a handheld GPS in the field and I have been using BackCountry Navigator for a year now on my phone. For the past 6 weeks I have been using BackCountry Navigator on my android tablet and I do like the setup. Won't give my Ozi, but I really like it. So to answer your question...

    Where's Quality Control

So true in that statement, but when you pay $1,000 for a radio you would think they would try alittle harder.

    Where's Quality Control

I only want this ICOM because it is one of the better D-Link systems out their. The tech I took it to is going to fix common issues with ICOM's and redo all of the solders. Granted it voids the warranty, but who cares. The good thing he owns me a favor so I am only getting charged parts and not...

    Where's Quality Control

I have a ICOM ID-1 and the other day a friend and myself where working on a new trail and lost the track. I was connected to the internet over D-Star downloading satellite images and my friend went to the other side of the mountain to see if he could pick up the trail. While I was downloading...

    Digital Maps

Send me a PM with the area you are going and your email address, I will create them for you if you like. I already have most of Canada's Toporama in Ozi.

    Digital Maps

How many files are in the zip file? When I download and unzip the files I end up with 5 files from each zip file. All of these unziped files need to be in the same directory. Now if you are using the Shareware/Demo version there are limitations. But it does allow full communication with the...

    Digital Maps

I am going to assume that you will be using the data from the Toporama interface. Zoom into the area that you want data for then click “Search available datasets”. On the next screen just click “Submit” located at that bottom of the page. In the next screen is a list of the files that will be...

    Maps for Delorme PN-60w

In one word, no. But if you have Delorme X-Map you can import Geotiff images, which are available from many different sources, and then use the map cutter in X-Map so you can load the images into the GPS. A good website to get Raster and Vector data for Africa is Madmappers. As for the...

    Magellan 3045LM

You are correct in that Magellan switched to Tele Atlas. This really hurts the units ability to create routes. I had an opputunity to test one of these units. One still had the NAVTEQ maps and the second had the Tele Atlas. The unit with NAVTEQ gave me the best routing in both time saving and...

    .kml > .gpx conversion issue

don't know, I am only one version older than you. If Google releases another version that is when they will force me to upgrade.

    .kml > .gpx conversion issue

That is strange, for the life of me I can't reproduce the issue. If I start with the first file in your list and do all the steps that you do, I am able to import and export without a hitch. It is starting to make me wonder if it is a version issue. I have not updated my GE in along time. The...

    .kml > .gpx conversion issue

I have tried the files in GE on a PC, MAC and BSD running VMS and I am unable to reproduce the issue you are having. I would try reinstalling GE and see if that will fix your issue. If this does not help I would then just use GPS Visualizer to do the convertions for now and send the error to...

    .kml > .gpx conversion issue

For some reason when the original KMZ file was created, it took all the track points and separated them from the path. So when you look at the original file under the tracks you will have an extra drop down called points. It is almost like when the original file was created, it treated the path...
