do you NEED bigger tires? of course not.......especially if you're not going to do whatever else is necessary to run them effectively..... a locked XJ on 31's and 3" will go just about anywhere you'll dare go.....also depends on what gears and tranny you have.

how have you clocked the mileage then, with a GPS? when your speedo says 65 you're actually going around 69 mph without recalibrating.

yes.....effective gear ratio is quite different than "gear ratio". your Jeep in stock form will spin 2280 rpms at 65 mph with the .84 OD..... with 35's, it's now at 2150 with an "effective ratio of 3.87:1. with 4.56's it'll be at 2390, 4.88's it'll be at 2560 and with 5.13's it'll be at 2690...

4.56 will put you close to stock going from a 33 to 35.....with all that weight i would go lower to 4.88. the pinion size is getting smaller as you go to a lower ratio also. Ryanc....i'm having trouble understanding how a gear swap will affect the pinion angle if it works ok with...

on any truck you do look at make sure you check the chassis at the steering box. they have a tendancy to crack, sometimes an almost invisible hairline crack. move the steering wheel back and forth with the engine off and listen for clunks and check for worn out parts. check the body mounts...

you won't ruin the tranny with that effective gear ratio, but who knows what shape the tranny is in now. check the fluid for sure. the '88-'93 700R's are the best years they built and stand up to more abuse than the previous generations. make sure it has an aux cooler and don't let it "hunt"...

maybe that '90 has 3.42's........ 2.73, 3.08, 3.42 and 3.73 was what you could get for half ton in both 2 and 4 wheel drive, in those years. 3/4 ton had 4.10 and 4.56 as options.
