    netbooks

Ever look at the IBM Thinkpads? I have an X31...12" screen. Weighs 3 lbs or less. Good for double duty...it was my business laptop that I just now started using for GPS. Also, since it's not a new model, they are very affordable...$200 or so usually.

    Roof top tent

True. But putting my tent on the ground saves me from spending $1400 on a tent and $3000 on a trailer. :wings:

    Mahindra 4x4 pickup

Interesting...at this point, a 14mpg gas engine would be cheaper to drive than a 25mpg diesel. However, it's hard to accurately predict and forecast fuel cost. In the long run, though, fuel will only get more expensive. So which one will climb at the faster rate? Gasoline or diesel? Figure that...

    Roof top tent

It looks cool, but there's one major drawback it seems! When you have a vehicle with relatively little room inside the cabin (Liberty, XJ, etc), you need the roof rack for supplies when you go on outings. I found the roof rack a necessity to mount my 33" spare for my XJ. I also put a fuel can...

    Roof top tent

Are you sure? From a weight standpoint, I would think they would be OK. My rack is on gutter mounts, and I crawl around on it without any worry...I'm about 230, the rack is maybe 60 lbs, and my 33" spare is probably 70 lbs. I think you'd be OK weight-wise.

XJ Unibody - strong enough to "camperize"

Even if you figure out a way to cross-brace the body, there's simply no room. An XJ is a compact car with 4WD. Adding an oven, or a sink, or a fridge? HAHA...I can't even find a place to mount my CB radio. I had to buy one that had all of the controls in the mic body, just so I had room to put...

    Fuel Range

    10mpg x 20g tank = 200mi 1 5g can = 50mi 250 total range. Plenty for most excursions in CA, since you're never more than 100mi from a gas station!

    Roof top tent

Good call on the DIY solution. $1400 for a tent is absolutely ridiculous. You should be able to build it for $500 easy. They look cool, but I don't camp in swamps so I don't really need to sleep 6 feet over the ground!

XJ Unibody - strong enough to "camperize"

I think it's strong enough...but I don't think it's anywhere near BIG enough. My Volvo sedan has more interior space than my XJ. PS, it's a unibody. My 1990 VW Golf and 1995 Volvo has the same "frame rails", as do most unibody cars.

    Montero vs. Trooper

I posted for the Montero! So much so, in fact, that if my Cherokee XJ wasn't financed, I'd sell my Jeep tomorrow and buy another Montero instead. :) It's the best kept secret in 4x4's. The only drawback was the IFS, but you can convert it to live axle for a grand or so. Good engine, sturdy...

    Bradshaw Trail...February 6th,7th,8th,and,9th

The Volvo has a rear locker...the Jeep is open/open. haha! I might do better in the Volvo anyway! :)

    Montero vs. Trooper

...but it's not an LSD, because it fully locks...it does not slip when fully engaged. It achieves a 50/50 torque ratio between the 2 drive axles. By definition, that's a locker. Watch this video, they compare 3 different types of axles: 1) Open 2) LSD 3) Eaton G80 Locker...

Laptop navigation - Source for free maps or programs?

Hey gang, I am putting a laptop mount in my Jeep so I can have a large-screen GPS and also the ability to upload pics as I take them. I have a bluetooth GPS receiver for the laptop. I think I have Streets and Trips installed. I also have Google Earth Pro, but i don't know how to do anything...

    Bradshaw Trail...February 6th,7th,8th,and,9th

Looks like it's all fire road...I'd be temped to drive my Volvo instead of my Jeep to save on gas! Are there any sections that require 4wd?

    Montero vs. Trooper

If it locks both axles at any point in it's action to a 50/50 split, it's technically a locker. Does not need a switch (Detroit Locker, etc) and doesn't matter if it uses clutch packs. The G80 does not allow either of the drive wheels to slip once it's locked up, which means it's not an LSD. An...

    Montero vs. Trooper

If you're talking about the Eaton G80, it's a Locker, not an LSD. My Volvo has the same locker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbMZ9vcYVSg
