New to me 1998 Outback and some questions

If that's the original timing belt, have it changed even though it's well below the mileage point. The age of that belt is way past where I would be comfortable. As for the head gaskets, I've owned a 97, 98, 05, 06 Outback, and a 2010 Forester. The head gaskets went on the 97 with 157k...

Went out to play on the Shoe Creek Trail in VA. This is my 96 Disco 1, T-Rex.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Aside from replacing the stereo with a JVC double din unit, it's pretty stock - which is fine with me. I like the simple interiors of these things. I think you'll be happy when you get one. It's a really nice driving vehicle. Replacing the front and rear sway bars with STi bars made it...

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Thanks guys. They aren't the most exciting thing to look at fresh off the lot, but I've really tried to make mine tastefully stand out. Here are a couple more recent pics.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Agreed. I had a 97 Outback and I loved how well that engine pulled from the low end. I stalled a few times the time I took this on a really rough Jeep trail. I made it with no problem and had grip to spare in all situations, but definitely missed low range.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

I really enjoy the manual. Definitely makes the Forester more enjoyable. I would rather have the 2.5 with the 5-speed than the XT and an auto. I will admit, though, that if I off-roaded this more often (I have an old Wrangler for true wheeling) I would go with the auto. Without low-range you...

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

I definitely took a hit with the ATs. Before them I would do 26-27 highway. The best I got on my last trip was 24. I'm still averaging 22 with mixed driving.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Here's my 2010 Forester 2.5X 5MT. I've added wider rims with General Grabber ATs, PIAA fog lights, push bar, various trim bits such as the side trim and window visors, roof rack with basket and Thule bike rack, upgraded the audio inside, and STi front and rear sway bars. I think that's it...

What Subaru , would you pick for offroad us?

The Subaru AWD set-up isn't really at all similar to the Olds AWD set-up. Here's a great article comparing the different 4WD and AWD designs. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2013/06/alphabet-soup-4x4-vs-4wd-vs-awd-wheres-the-differential/ From the article: "This also means that the Subaru...

What Subaru , would you pick for offroad us?

I went the utility trailer route. It's perfect. Get a good class 3 hitch for it (I have a Curt, and am very pleased), and you'll have the best of all worlds. Good gas mileage and maneuverability, utility when needed. I have a 2010 Forester that I love dearly. I've genuinely wheeled it and...

    Subcompact Overland Upgrades. '84 Subaru

You do amazing work. Well done. This generation Subaru GLs is easily my favorite. I have an '83 Brat and have owned an 82 and 84 as well. Fantastically fun cars.

Real world mileage Subaru Forester pulling a trailer? (say 1200#)

Towing a very full and heavy utility trailer I got 18. Normally on the highway I get 27, so it was definitely a big drop. With that said, it pulled just fine and that's about the mileage I think you could expect from anything when towing, give or take a couple mpgs.

Picked up this classic for 900 bucks. A 1983 single owner Subaru Brat. Not bad condition, though it needs some mechanical work and some rust taken care of. Can't wait to take it out on some adventures.

    Subaru shopping...with questions?

Agreed about the 2.5 being a good motor. Aside from the head gasket issue they last for a long time. The H6 is a good motor too, though. The only one I would avoid is the turbo models. Tons of fun, but when bought used you have no idea how well they were maintained or driven. I say this...

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Way too rocky for a WRX, unfortunately. I wouldn't do it with anything less than 8.5" clearance, or at least a lot of protection. I was reading reviews of the trail AFTER I got home and read more than a few people claim stock XJ Cherokees might have a hard time (they wouldn't).

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

Here's one more picture from this past weekend. This is "Big Levels" out in Lyndhurst, VA. It's a pretty rocky trail and I was wheeling with my buddies who were all in Jeeps. I'm also a lifted Jeep Wrangler owner, but it was out of commission this weekend so the Subie was called to the plate...

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

My 2010 Forester with 5MT. I'm planning on rims and some BF Goodrich ATs. It's been a phenomenal vehicle so far and remarkably capable off-road.
