Make sure you buy one of these kits, DO NOT BUY THE REPLACEMENT O-RINGS FROM AN AUTO PARTS STORE! The kits from Ford or International come with a new plug and the O-Ring installed and it is an updated design.
Oil Rail End Plugs (large plugs at each end of heads; incl. O-rings, use LOCTITE #11747 to seal threads)
(Ford) Same number as International
(International) 1827535C94
When I bought my truck the front plug behind the alternator was leaking so I bought the o-ring package from the parts store, installed one with loctite, checked everything out and drove the truck. Not two months later, it was leaking real bad, like REALLY bad, of course this was halfway between Moab and Mexican Hat. I had the second o-ring from the package still in the truck and set about replacing it again. When I pulled the plug out the o-ring was brittle and the rubber was chipped. I figured I had botched it up the first time so I was extremely careful with this one. Topped the oil up and drove to Page for my Grand Canyon trip, my Dad drove the truck to Flagstaff and we hit the river.
Picked up the truck three weeks later, loaded the rafts on and checked into the hotel. Came out to go to dinner and there is a puddle under the truck, arrrggghhhhh. Made it to the parts store in Flagstaff just before they closed bought another set and some oil and proceeded to do this job a third time. When I pulled the plug out this time the o-ring was brittle and in pieces. Well I am not putting another one of those in there. Next morning Ford had one of the kits in stock fortunately.
It is a little more expensive, $12 compared to $4 but the design was totally different and the durometer of the rubber was very different. Two years now with the new 'good' part, no issues.
Cheers, Chris
