If you had to sell one?

What the specifics on both models...mileage, age, conditions, etc.
Both very clean.

LC80 - Cloth :) , OME'd, Ham'd, 315s, dual batts, all the various subtle JDA/non-USA mods, 1st-gen slee rear, slee sliders, ARB front, M12k. 119k

LC100 - Leather :( , OME'd, 315s, dual batts, no JDA/non-USA fun, OEM rear locker, rear-AC :) 109k, spanking new half-shafts.

I didn't realize you had modded the 100 so much. I say keep the hundy as you will probably get relatively more money for the 80 now than you will in a couple years. Pull the winch and other mods that will transfer (obviously the condo) and either see if you can find a good home for 80 as is or return to stock and sell the parts separately.

Application...Application...Application. Answer that and you'll find the answer to your original question :pROFSheriffHL:

Aye, but look at the two rigs. They're nearly identical in nearly every capability and capacity with only the slightest of edge going to the 80 albeit older. It's not like I'm comparing an FJ40 to a UZJ100.

Quite honestly neither of them can fit the family anymore for the long-haul trips cargo-wise. Yes, a trailer is one natural answer here, but doesn't solve the choice problem.

I think the 80 only seems like it's more of a wheeler because it hurts less when you dent it.

I'd keep that hundy and put all your cool stuff on it. Your 80 is nice- someone will pay for that. You can always get cloth seat covers or something to combat the swampbutt.

Did you get rid of your 40?

I'd probably lean toward the 100 too. I didn't see what years the 80/100 were. It makes a difference if you had an early verses a later model 80 or an early 100 with the weaker front end.

80 prices are dropping like a rock and now is probably the time to sell, because it will only get worse from here out. The 100 I drove had more power, much better braking, and rode better on the street than my 80. On top of that, they get somewhat better gas mileage. Assuming use as a daily driver, family rig, moderate off roader, I'd lean towards the 100 and profit from the 80 while you still can.

You said yourself the difference between the 80/100 off road is minimal in your opinion. Beyond that, the 100 seems to have all the advantages, including more power, better ride, more fuel economy, lower miles, newer overall, and extra features like rear A/C. The 100 will also have more parts adn dealer support for longer than the 80 will, since the last 80 was produced more than 10 years, while the last 100 just recently rolled off the line and that particular V-8 is still in production.

I really like my 80 and I believe it has the upper hand off road, but having driven my 80 extensively and a 100 a little bit, for a daily driver, road trip rig with some light off roading, I think I'd prefer the 100.

I sold my 100 (see avatar) and would regret it totally, if I did randomly find a sweet FJ55. Wife reminds me on a weekly basis that we should not have sold it. ARB Sahara bumper in the garage reminds me every day that I should not have sold it.

Bottom line: I plan to get another one sometime in the next 2 years...

But how and where do you use the rig(s)? If your app is less severe terrain (i.e. less crawling) and more exped type travels then the hundy is the choice. On the other hand if your travels are more crawl'n type trails (I can't imagine the family really digs on these types of trails though) then the 80 would be my choice. Having said that I have driven my hundy over harder trails than I thought I ever would and it has performed admirably...granted with the incredible help of expert spotters and rock stackers...but it did it nonetheless. And...IMO the hundy excels at 90% of my N Nevada backcountry travels...comfy but capable. And speaking of trailers my '99 V8 pulls my heavily laden rig and Horizon pretty darn well!

100

If I had a choice I'd go for the 100. It's younger, stronger(acceleration/braking wise) and slightly more roomy. Also, with the right protection and a skilled driver your 100 can do some really challenging trails. Lastly, if you end up getting a trailer your 100 wouldn't be so mad pulling it.

After hearing about the two vehicles and intended use I would say keep the 100. Just from what I am understanding you want to use it for I think you will be happier. A good driver can take the 100 anywhere an 80 can go. Earlier when I said I would keep the 80 I wasn't sure of your uses. Plus I don't have a family. If I had kids I would keep the 100 hands down for safety. Your 100 should have at minimum 200K trouble free miles left in it, the 80 will probably at the very least will need a head gasket. My brothers 02 hundy has 200k Miles and doesn't burn a drop of oil and the compression is perfect. He beats the piss out of it. Plus with 80 prices dropping you can go back and get one later if you change your mind, I doubt you will though.

I know I'll get the smackdown from saying this, but I still give the edge to my 80. There are a # of even mild trails that we regular in Utah where the 80 simply performs better whilst the 100'll fly a tire and need to be locked. All that said, I still don't really `rock-crawl' at all.

the 80 will probably at the very least will need a head gasket

The HG change was already performed by the venerable Robbie at the time at Slee's. You're right about the 2UZ though, it's one tickin' engine that has wear numbers probably better than any Toy engineer expected.

How about from a financial perspective? I can leverage a lot more $ from the sale of the 100 than the $ I could get from the 80's sale, right? The next plan will require $ and I feel that I have more margin-play on the 100?
