ITENERARY: I'm still working on the meetup point, trail itenerary, etc. I intend it to be suitable for both beginners and advanced wheelers. I will post up both general area maps and trail overviews. If I can find them, I'll also post up gps waypoints.
I should mention that although the Cleghorn trail is considered by most accounts as an easy one, stuff can happen which can cause vehicle or personal damage and while we endeavor to avoid those situations sometimes we can't. That said if you absolutely cannot bear the thought of getting a scratch you probably shouldn't be taking your vehicle off road. While I'll do my best to point out the easier routes there is no way I can promise you that you won't get a scratch or even more.
WHAT TO BRING:
Comms:
- CB Radio or at least an FRS/GMRS radio. *
- Cell phone: Please send me your number. I will create an attendee list with everyone's cell number and send it to everyone. I need your number in case we need to contact you.
- 2M radio is also nice but most won't have it so also have CB or FRS/GMRS.
- Sat Phone or Spot is nice to have.
Clothing:
- Dress in layers. *
- Bring a complete extra set of clothes in a water resistant backpack or duffel bag. *
- Bring both warm and cold weather jackets. A 3-in-1 jacket is nice for this. *
- Bring a simple pair of work gloves to protect your hands from the elements and environment. They can be either cloth or leather.
- Try to wear warm shoes with decent heel & ankle support.
Vehicle:
- Please try and ensure your vehicle is in good working order. If you're not sure if it's good enough, ask.
- Engine oil (+1 quarts) *
- Transmission oil (1 quart) *
- Coolant (1 gallon) *
- Your vehicle must also have solid recovery points. * For Gen I and II Montero's I know where those are. For other rigs, they may or may not exist in stock form and you may have to add them yourself.
Misc.
- 1st aid kit * (simple or complex depends on your skill level)
- Water (in a 'bump' resistant container) *
- Food (both short term snack foods like chips, sandwiches, etc. and a couple of days worth of longer term canned foods w/ can opener) *
- Sleeping gear (0 deg bag if you have one, or several warm blankets)
This is a list just off the top of my head. While you probably won't use 90% of it, it's always good to be prepared just in case. I've put an asterisk after the ones I think you should always have when going off road.
