This evening after work I decided to tackle one of the fee remaining big jobs for the trailer. The actual tailgate.

At first I was a bit hesitant that I wasn't going to get it square and fit right but I just took me time and did one piece at a time and I'm very happy with the results.

Now I just have to figure out what type of latch to do and what kind of hinges I want to use. Any one have any suggestions?

I think I need a bigger truck!
I would suggest a set of weld on hinges with zerks in the ends. Some of them can be disassembled IIRC so if you ever wanted to you could remove the gate. As for latches, I am very happy with the De-Sta-Co latches my friend Wavebreaker sourced.

They latch very tight, are adjustable and are reasonably priced. You can get locking ones too I believe?

Looking good man, one of the very best fab jobs I have seen on these trailers for the gate!!

So I decided to go with the weld on hinges. They were easy to weld but a pain in the *** to align. The hinges aren't perfect but the tailgate drops lays and closes straight.

Here is a few pics

One of the other cable connections broke so I will have to install the other cable tomorrow and then progress on the latches and top lip for the tailgate.

Also shown in the pictures I have the trailer stabilizers that's I picked up from e trailer. They are very compact and have a large range of travel and easy to adjust

Looks good, How do you like the stabilizers?

So far they seem to work good. They are very compact when folded and easy to get into position. The only thing I think I might do is make a base with a few claws so they can dig into dirt better when on a trail

I want to put this out for suggestions.

For the latch I was thinking of going with a clean simple approach so I had this idea. I'll weld on the C channel as a handle on the tailgate door with these 2 barrel locks one for each side to slide lock into the tub and with a small padlock to be able to slide into the whole to lock. This will give the rear a nice clean look and prevent someone from cutting the padlocks open and then to strengthen the handle I will fill the middle with a 1˝ square tube

Not sure I comprehend your idea with the lock. But, I like those stabilizers. I may pick up a few of those. I've never had much desire to permanently attach stabilizers to my trailer. I've never had mine out, so I reserve the right to change my opinion on that matter:)

Yeah neither do I... NOW

I tried but with that barrel type lock I can't get it to look smoothly. I also tried the L shaped slide latch and I welded on the catch but couldnt get a good mount and tight close with that style either so I'm gonna cut off the catch tomorrow so I'm still stuck and trying to find a good latch to keep the gate closed without spending a ton of money on them.

The next issue is I'm not sure I'm happy with the barrel style hinges. I welded them on really well but just don't like how they operate the door and how they look so I may just cut those off also and find another hinges... Also looking for suggestions on that. I guess today was just a frustrating day but I did get alot done but I'm not totally satisfied with the things I mentioned earlier. I did weld on the handle for the tailgate and I like how that came out just need to finish welding a couple spots

What don't you like about the barrel hinges? I used barrel style hinges on my tailgate and I really like the way they operate. Perhaps your's operate differently than mine since you put your framework on the inside of the tub. Not sure that would make a huge difference though.

Trust me, I know about frustrating days. I have had my fair share, including yesterday. I'll update my thread later with the details :iagree:

They were a big pain in *** to work with so I wanted to write them off completely.

On my round of errands this morning I had to go To my local welding supply and I was looking at the barrel hinges again and I decided to go with the bigger 6" ones. I think they will be easier to work with and to get right. So I will cut off the smaller one grind it down and do them over.

For the latches I decided to go with the destaco latches that was suggested earlier and instead of doing a lock I think I just decided to do a latch on the interior on the tailgate so I can just lock it from the inside for storage and what not.
